I think Fortinos, on Main.
There's a convenience store in the Keyes Res when you're lazy and run out of milk.

the fortinos is the closest to campus, its a couple blocks down the road toward university plaza.
there's also a metro on the other side of westdale and a smaller convenience style establishment near westdale.
try this (though it has farther ones):

google maps is really useful it will tell you bus routes as well

Better question (for me, at least) is:
What is the cheapest grocery store (in Hamilton)?
The SuperStore here in Vancouver is pretty cheap but unfortunately there's none in Hamilton :(

I think No Frills would probably be the cheapest one but anyone know of something cheaper?
P.S. I like quoting myself

To my knowledge there are really only two major chains of grocery store in Hamilton: Fortinos and Metro. SuperStore (if that refers to "Real Canadian SuperStore") is under the same company as Fortinos, so yes, Fortinos is generally cheaper than Metro. Or so I have found.
Someone please correct me if they know of any other good grocery stores in Hamilton...
EDIT: Apparently there are a few other stores, but they are quite significantly farther away than Fortinos and Metro from campus...

I thought Metro was cheaper than Fortinos... does anyone know? 'Cause I'll gladly make the trip to Metro if that's the case.
There's a Metro at University Plaza, as well as at the edge of Westdale sort of. Fortinos is on Main St, west of the university, and also at Dundurn & Main going towards downtown.
The cheapest grocery store I know if No Frills, and that's in the East end, pretty far from Mac.

Overall I'd say Fortinos is cheaper and I like their brands (ie. President's Choice) better than what Metro has. Make sure you check out the flyer (you can view them online) and try to buy sale items when you can.

The Barn stores became Metro when Metro took over a bunch of grocery stores including The Barn, Ultra Food & Drug, and Dominion

Metro took over basically. The Barn, Dominion, A & P are Metro now. I thought it was a Hamilton thing at first, but I was pleasantly surprised on a trip home to Toronto.

Yeah, I didn't know they owned The Barn.
So Metro doesn't have subsidiaries anymore? Everything is just called Metro?

I think they own Food Basics (which is their discount chain) similar to No Frills (Loblaws discount) and Price Chopper (Sobey's discount) but aside from the discount stores I think they re-branded all the other stores as Metro (which is why there's so many Metro stores around now)
