Health Science
okay, so here is the issue. i am in grade 12 this year and my boyfriend went to university this year at U of T. he says his friend's dad knows the guy who created the health science curriculum. he said that the guy who created the curriculum says it sucks and the only reason you need a ninety to get in is because Mac didn't have a comparable health science program to other schools. i am really excited about the look of the program myself and need to know, by real experience, if it is good or not. i don't know whether or not to take this as just a piece of gossip...please help!!

Is it possible for you to talk to the boyfriend's dad's friend perhaps and get his actual opinion, rather than one that may have been distorted/changed through some broken telephone?
You seem to know that people's experiences in the program are much more valuable than hearsay, good for you!
Also, just because the guy who developed the program (apparently) thinks it is bad means it is...the Health Sci program (like any program) changes over the years, so it may not resemble what it did nine years ago when it was founded.

There is no sole developer of the current Health Science (Honours) curriculum. Its entering class was in 2000 and over the years, feedback from students and faculty alike changed the very face of the program.
If you go to this link ( http://www.stlhe.ca/en/awards/alan_b...cipients.p hp) and head to 2005 when the Health Sciences program won a prestigious award for its unique pedagogy, you'll see raw data regarding student satisfaction in the program.
Everyone's perception of the program is unique and I can't speak for our Assistant Dean, however, I don't think he would have stuck around for the past ten years unless he liked what he was doing.

Health sci is a pretty good program but you should only enroll in it if you're set on going into med school/dental school. You won't regret it.
If you want a more rounded education and want to keep your options open, choose Life Sci (U of T/Mac for example), then you can major in a discipline like bio or chem after 1st year.

Although I'm not in Health Sci, there is an advantage Mac definately has over U of T. We have stuff to do on campus, and a LOT. Mac has over 250 clubs, groups for students in res, groups for off-campus students, groups for all of the faculties, intramural teams etc etc etc.
None of the people I know who went to U of T ever mentioned the things they could do on campus in terms of extra-curriculars. Your education experience is more than just academics. And that should be part of your decision too.
Also, I've heard that their meal plan is very, very limiting...some of the main places to eat close ridiculously early (6pm) and aren't open on weekends. My friends who lived in res at U of T hated their food options...another thing to consider...

Go into Med Rad Sci! That way you'll have a job with your degree if you don't make it into med school and you can still learn lots of medical terminology and pretend you're on Gray's Anatomy!
