I have seen a homeless person empty out a recycling bin on the second floor of a building on the UBC campus, probably walked away with 5 or so bucks worth of empties. It was quite surprising because it isn't something I would have expected but I have to respect his ability to find an untapped market. Sure beats hunting through garbage bins in downtown or something like that.

We get money for recycling stuff? o.O I knew that they had this in some cities (e.g. Montreal) but I didn't know that Toronto or Hamilton had this. Could someone clarify or send me a link to this? I'd like to make some extra cash from stuff I end up throwing in my blue bin...

It's only for alcohol containers.

Wrong. You can sell aluminum to scrap dealers. You can actually make quit a lot that way... its usually something like $23-25 for a full bag of pop cans and the like.

Oh right, I forgot about aluminum. But in the end you could sell all kinds of scrap. Copper is also pretty high I believe.

The big reason for aluminum is because it costs more money to extract aluminum from the earth than it does to process used aluminum.

Copper is huge! The wildlife management work I do for Orkin is based on an exclusive contract with Hydro One. I access 18 different Hydro One transformer sites, and the security that they put into those sites is crazy (due to the high amount of copper on-site) to prevent people from trying to get in! Some sites have a razor-wire inner fence with barbed wire on top and conventional fencing on the outside. The fences also extend into the ground by 6 inches and then out under the ground another 2 feet.

Inside the sites, there are electric fences.

Finally, there are remote sensors on most copper samples in these sites so that they can be tracked if stolen. This says a lot for how much copper is worth (currently US$ 2.8393/lb)

Try staying up late on Sterling Sunday night sometime. There's a guy that goes into every single recycling bin on the street and takes out the cans. When he's done, he's got over a hundred bucks there.

Sorry I was being to vague. In Alberta and BC (I know for sure, i am pretty positive its also true in some other provinces) you pay a deposit on pop bottles, cans, juice boxes and recently in Alberta milk cartons. It ranges from 5 - 10 cents. However Ontario you don't pay a deposit so you obviously don't get any money back. It makes you think twice when you throw out a pop can because its 10 cents gone. Although Calgary hasn't said how much money it collects through its recycling program (which sadly just started a couple months ago), people were estimating it was in the hundreds of thousands every month from people not returning their empty containers.

I didn't get a lot cans but a lot of bottles of pop, once the the pop has expired, the company will return your money for the expired bottles and then you can either throw it away or keep them. Same works for lays chips.
