Hamilton, Ont - The top four OUA university men’s volleyball teams will gather at McMaster this weekend to decide which will take home the OUA title and carry Ontario’s banner into the National Championship.
The McMaster men’s volleyball team has been in this position before, having won OUA Championships in 2008 and 2009, and will enjoy the friendly confines of the Burridge Gymnasium as it strives to complete the three-peat, and advance to the CIS tournament for the 5th consecutive season.
The Final-Four format is new to the OUA this season, replacing the previous format that saw teams play best of three playoff series. The single elimination structure more closely follows the CIS Tournament format, which involves the final eight teams from across Canada.
McMaster will have to overcome its nemesis from conference play when it takes on the Guelph Gryphons in the first semi-final at 6 P.M.. Guelph was able to sweep the season series versus the Marauders, handing McMaster two of the team’s three losses this season. The fifth-seeded Gryphons advanced with a 3-2 road win at Windsor.
The other semi-final will feature second-seeded Queen’s taking on third-seed Western at 8 P.M. Friday night’s winners will advance to the OUA Championship match, Saturday at 7 P.M.
The OUA champion will advance to the CIS Championship tournament, being hosted this year at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, B.C., March 12-14, 2010.
