Huge Library fine
So I got an email from the library on may 4th that said i had 14 days to return these books I had, or they would charge me for them. Just returned them today on what I thought was the last day, but it says I have a 761$ fine on my account. It also still says that they're checked out (probably because the library is closed all weekend?).

After they get checked in, will this fine go away? What kind of overdue charges does the library have?
Thanks

Your best bet is to go to the library and show them the email to get the fines reversed.

Hey Nadia, hopefully this thread will clear things up and you don't end up paying:

Thanks, yeah I did see that thread already. What I'm worried about is what someone mentioned there

That would be 25$ per book :(

Ever seen that episode of Married With Children, about Al trying to return a book he took back in grade school?

Just forget about it, and that's it, it's just a book.

Haven't seen the episode, but you can't just "forget" about it; if you owe money to the library, then once they put that on your student account you can't see your grades, access your transcripts or graduate.

Star is correct. The university will hold 'balances due' (including library book fees) over your head until you pay. You won't be able to get transcripts, grades, etc.

But don't let that scare you! Like I said in the other thread that was mentioned here, just take a deep breath - everything can easily be sorted out.

First: ask a librarian for help. This could be a mis-understanding or error and you may not have to pay that large fee if you talk with them.

See the borrowing/fees policy here: http://library.mcmaster.ca/borrow#Re...iods_and_Fines

Under "Penalties for Not Returning Materials" it reads:

"If you don't return an overdue item we suspend your borrowing privileges, charge the cost of replacing the book, and a $25 non-refundable administrative fee per item."

So at most you'll be charged $25 per book, since you returned them.

My guess is that they may have just been delayed getting checked back in because of the weekend. Its not like you held onto the books for years and forgot to return them for a long period of time. If you were a day late returning, or confused about the due date I'm sure you can get it sorted out with one of the librarians. They are really nice people, you just have to talk to them

Figured I'd update this in case anyone else finds themselves in this dilemma in the future..

All the fines were cleared that next tuesday and I didn't have to pay anything!! yay! So now you know, you can check out a book for the entire term + month of summer and there will be no fines
