So I saw the movie this weekend, and I have to say I'm impressed. They worked incredibly well with the PG-13 rating constraint, and although they did modify some things from the book, I do actually think it was for the better (and not often can I say that). It gave more importance to certain aspects of the story that, otherwise, would not have been able to be fleshed out and fully understood in the 2 1/2 hour time constraint.
I don't think it was an amazing, one of those "holy shit you have to see this otherwise your life won't be complete" movies, but considering that it's a film adaptation from a book and I didn't walk out of the cinema raging, in fact I was quite satisfied, that was in itself an accomplishment.
Save for the incredibly shaky fight and action scenes (a style I really detest), I absolutely love the atmosphere they created with the filming, set and the typeface used. I was actually pleasantly surprised, especially at the introduction scene; it wasn't what I was expecting. Mostly because it was unique, and I wasn't expecting it from a film that I thought would have been more mainstream.
I have one or two minor gripes, but all in all I think they did a great job. Can't wait to see how they handle book two; I think that's going to be the real challenge.

I agree. I loved it. There were some things that were cut out of the film that I actually prefer not having. My only complaint is the shaky cam as well. It stayed VERY true to the book though, I was impressed. I might go see it again.
Like Yogurt said, it's not one of those "You need to see it!!!!" films, but if you've read the book, I think you'll be very happy with it.
