from wikipedia, notice the last sentence.
Competitors
Rogers' main competitors are the satellite television provider Bell TV; and the two main television companies controlled by Shaw Communications: Shaw Cable, and Shaw Direct (Satellite). Shaw Cable has requisitioned and traded contested territory, leading to a lack of direct competition between Shaw Cable and Rogers Cable.

The only advantage of Cogeco is it's faster, but at a much higher cost with a much lower bandwidth cap.
I have TekSavvy :p

Very interesting...how much is TekSavvy charging and can you use your landline at the same time as you're surfing?
I'm looking for an alternative to Bell which I swear is an evil company lol
low bandwidth limits + poor customer service = epic failure

I just called. We aren't using a phone line because we all have cellphones but it's 29.95 for premium and 9.10 for band rate for my house. Which is apparently 41$ including taxes... so 5% taxes? o.O

Cool, not bad
Bell is currently wallet-raping me at $18 for 2GB of usage + $2.50/GB overage use ):<
Needless to say, almost anything else sounds a lot nicer ^^

Believe me, I can't and I've tried really hard DDDDD:
Even just watching the psych lectures in first year ate up a lot of bandwidth.
Any time I want to watch YouTube or torrent something, I try to do it at school to avoid being charged too much overage lol
Unfortunately, I hear that macconnect speeds are nowhere near as nice as the ones you can get in rez.

Ya, $40 sounds right as jhan523 said. I think that's if you don't already have a land line (roughly $10 for a dry loop). And to answer your second question, yes... only since the late 90s, lol.

Wait, what if we dont have an active phone line (we have cell phones), but the people living upstair DO have an active phone line.
Would we need dry-loop still?

I think in that case you can maybe just use their phone lines. I don't think it will cost them anything, but I'm not sure.

Alright thanks.
How do they bill you? Is it just one person listed as the account holder and they get billed and ask the house mates for money each month?
Or can you make it so all of you are on the bill or something?

The bill will be under one persons name (the person paying), but you can list all of your room mates under the account so that they can talk with tech support and stuff.

Anyway, don't worry though guys, according to my mom (she's in advertising) there are some serious competitors getting prepared to knock down Bell and Rogers' domination of the communication infrastructure in Canada . This all has to do with certain wireless spectrums being sold off after a lot of analog broadcasting stations got shut down (therefore, they're starting with cell phones).
Maybe we'll finally be able to upgrade from friggin 5 - 10 Mb/s DSL internet like the rest of the world after competition sets in.
