Internet providers discussion (which is cheapest/best?)
So, I want to get the lowdown on the fastest yet affordable internet service available. :]

I heard about TekSavvy being super cheap with huge data transfer capacities (something like 200GB). But I don't know if it's as fast as Rogers or Cogeco.

Bell is somewhat... slow. :/

What are you guys going to use?

there is no rogers in hamilton.

i have cogeco at home and i used speedtest to determine my download speed it 10 mbps but really slow upload rate (like .4 mbps or something) BUT limit of 60 GB/month

bell i havnt tried so im not sure.

my house mates and i are probly gunna get a tv/internet bundle from cogeco.

havnt checked out teksavvy yet tho so we'll see, keeping that an option.

edit: just checked, teksavvy's internet is about $15 cheaper for 200gb/month and $5 for unlimited/month than cogeco.

but, teksavvy is only 5mbps and cogeco is 10. hmmm....

I have TekSavvy at home and my housemates and I have it in Hamilton too. TekSavvy is far cheaper than Cogeco and has MUCH better customer service. If you go even 1 MB over Cogeco's 100 GB per month limit (That's there $70 plan); they'll charge you an addition $ 20 or so.

TekSavvy has never charged me for overages, and I've been over a few times :p.

Cogeco is 10 Mb/s, but if you aren't a heavy internet user, you won't notice the difference from 5 Mb/s.

Go with TekSavvy. Don't support the crappy big name brands.

Bell for life. Overcharged plan + charge if you go over limit. Awesome.

Problem: Throttle
Solution: Private seeders

Problem: Low Caps
Solution: Unlimited Plan

Problem: Evil
Solution: $$$$$

Ya, but you aren't going to be able to use those private seeders long if you can't upload to keep your ratio up. Traffic shaping still makes downloading from them crappy too...

And Bell's unlimited plan still has a cap. It's something around 60 to 100 GB (can't remember exactly). It only applies to new users though.

Fact #1: All internet companies suck and are evil.

Fact #2: Bell is the worst of the bunch

Fact #3: Rogers is the best (although not offered in Hamilton)

Note: Refer to Fact #1

I've been looking through all three ISPs.

Okay so... in the 30 buck range.

Teksavvy: 5 Mbps / 200 GB - 30 bucks
Bell: 6 Mpbs / 25 GB - 30 bucks
Cogeco : 3 Mbps / 20 GB - 35 bucks

In 40...

Teksavvy: 5 Mbps / Unlimited - 40 bucks
Bell: 12 Mbps / 50 GB - 40 bucks
Cogeco: 10 Mbps / 60 GB - 45 bucks

It seems like TekSavvy offers a lot of bandwidth, but not a lot of speed. While Cogeco is sort of a rip off. Bell offers moderate bandwidth compared to TekSavvy, but more speed.

I dunno. I'm not sure 5 Mbps is fast enough, my roomate likes to torrent lol and so do I from time to time.

No rogers sucks to. I actually switched to TekSavvy from them two years ago when they started getting too serious with throttling and bandwidth capping.

TekSavvy's the only one that's not evil. They're the only ones trying to fight against the implementation of bandwidth throttling.

For experience, Bell speed is amazing. Yes, its unlimited plan.

With bell on private, down is 500kbs, up is 70kbs. Then leave your computer on. . . And the amazing thing with bell is that you can still use direct download sites like megaupload, rslinks. And also play your fps online with 74ms avg.

I haven't turned my comp off since start of summer. Someone probably has it longer. Hah

The reason I'm pot committed with Rogers is they offer a discount if you have your cable/phone with them too; Which I do. So it works out to be cheaper. Plus I've never had a problem with their speed.

That's identical to TekSavvy; not an amazing coincidence since TekSavvy uses Bell's lines.

But like I said before, TekSavvy isn't evil.
