It will be shared most probably, he gave me a example of Wilfred Laurier where years back the campus lacked Wireless. The administration wasn't budging so the CIO(same guy) went to the WLUSU President and the president agreed to provide a small percentage of the costs. Because of that the administration had no option but to cover the rest, in other words it will still require lobbying for additional funding.

On the flip side google offers the service for free (so no long term costs) and the only costs will be integrating labour costs into our registrars system, they even are known to offer sponsorship for those costs. But this is just the very very initial stage of everything.

I don't understand the second part of your question though. Can you please elaborate?

I mean no disrespect Huzaifa, but I would much rather if Kieran answered this question. This all ties into my earlier criticism (mainly that his team has done most of the talking), and I would like to know how Kieran, as the CEO of MSU Inc. would approach these concerns.

The second part of my question, to be more explanatory, is that if the CIO **agrees** to the proposed changes but with stipulations of the MSU sharing the costs, where will that money come from if the budget for the year has already been set? One of the problems that the MSU constantly faces is straying from its budget and then ending up with 300K losses at the end of the fiscal year -- a contribution to a cloud computing or google apps or whatever else is needed would obviously not be included in this year's budget, so from what deposit of money will this cost be paid?

I understand, I'll let Kieran answer your questions personally!

I only initially answered because I had directly asked the same question you had to the CIO and had received a few answers.

Just got this for my Google Apps account for DCS. Just something to consider in the event you lobby for the change. Not a roadblock. Just a side effect or potential hassle people may have to deal with.

Dear Google Apps admin,

In order to continue to improve our products and deliver more sophisticated features and performance, we are harnessing some of the latest improvements in web browser technology. This includes faster JavaScript processing and new standards like HTML5. As a result, over the course of 2010, we will be phasing out support for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as other older browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers.

We plan to begin phasing out support of these older browsers on the Google Docs suite and the Google Sites editor on March 1, 2010. After that point, certain functionality within these applications may have higher latency and may not work correctly in these older browsers. Later in 2010, we will start to phase out support for these browsers for Google Mail and Google Calendar.

Google Apps will continue to support Internet Explorer 7.0 and above, Firefox 3.0 and above, Google Chrome 4.0 and above, and Safari 3.0 and above.

Starting this week, users on these older browsers will see a message in Google Docs and the Google Sites editor explaining this change and asking them to upgrade their browser. We will also alert you again closer to March 1 to remind you of this change.

In 2009, the Google Apps team delivered more than 100 improvements to enhance your product experience. We are aiming to beat that in 2010 and continue to deliver the best and most innovative collaboration products for businesses.

Thank you for your continued support!

Sincerely,

The Google Apps team

Let me first apologize for having unintentionally sparked a controversy which I was unaware of until now, and have thus neglected to mediate. I would like to clarify that I am not a part of any other campaign team; my comments were made as a member of the student body, and reflect only on myself.

I chose to post anonymously for two reasons: one, I didn’t feel it was necessary to disclose my identity given that I was posting about a general concern, to people that I have never met and would not recognize if I did. Two, I wanted to avoid the possibility that my comments would be associated with other candidates, and instead be recognized for what they were: the opinion of a student unaffiliated with any other campaign team. In retrospect, my attempted anonymity was a mistake, and accomplished the exact opposite of what I intended. It seems to have piqued the interest of a few members of Mr. Alkerton’s campaign team, who must have gone to some lengths in order to “uncover” my identity.
I realize that I may have used too strong a term to describe my opinion, and I recognize that not everyone operates under the same definitions as I do. A better alternative is to describe aspects of Mr. Alkerton’s campaign as quite negative; relying, as far as I have been able to observe, more heavily on criticism of other candidates than any other campaign. Unfortunately, this approach has negatively influenced my impression of this candidate. This is my opinion, based on an outside perspective of the MSU Presidential campaign. It is not an attempt to "defame" Mr. Alkerton, but simply to raise an issue of concern. As a member of the student body, I feel obliged to voice this opinion, and I invite Mr. Alkerton to disprove it. Thus far, my experiences with his campaign team have only served to reinforce it.
With respect,

Stephanie

Hey Stephanie,

I'm still confused :S

It has generally been myself and Rohan here who have critiqued platforms because we naturally have a tendency to see right through them based on the research and personal experiences we have had with the MSU. Both of us for the lack of better word are too interested in the MSU and this isn't the first time we are critical of the MSU politics. As I explained before for those MacInsiders members that have been around they know that we have strong opinions on stuff but we always post them as us. Also all of the claims are backed up by research or prior knowledge, I don't see why debate, intellectual discourse and socratic method are negative and unutilitarian. Especially coming from an ArtSci student who if I'm not stereotyping wrongly is trained in inquiry and the importance of taking nothing at face value.

This criticism is something ALL candidates have faced and Kieran for example has encouraged people to ask on Insiders and more importantly to show up to Workshops at KTH everyday and put him on the spot, quite how then scrutinizing other teams is unfair is beyond me.

I can't put word in Rohan's mouth but I did all that as a MSU and SRA member who has a right to inform himself and constituents of what is feasible or not.

When we see platform points that say "We have researched and talked to MSU and Administration sources" without naming them and from our own experiences we are skeptic that they actually work we will think something is up; but some like Ash Ashagbeigi have refuted them with rational arguments and are cool about it. Also, I personally have limited the critique entirely on platform issues so I hope you imagine how upset I was when someone called "rocket" made an account and questioned Kieran's personality and leadership based on my posts on MacInsiders as a curious MSU member.

I assure you that Kieran's platform isn't based at all on attacking other people nor has he EVER asked us to do anything. Our critique is entirely at on our own discretion and I would hope that you would consider him as a candidate based on him and his ideas only. And yes I do apologize for my tone and the way I write, It is just my natural style, I do not intentionally try to sound abrasive or offensive, it just comes off that way as I have been told. The internet does have a tendency for people to misconstrue things!

Hi Rohan,

This really has nothing to do with the election at large so I apologize, but as the administrator and webmaster for the "SASS message boards" I'd just like a clarify a few things.

There are publicly viewable forums on sassweb that require users to post with their name. These cover a range of topics from housing to academics. There is, however, one anonymous forum, who's purpose is still hotly debated upon, that was grandfathered from sassweb's early days and now sits as quite an interesting social experiment.

The posts you mentioned were posted on the anonymous forum. It would constitute hypocrisy had the one comment represented the opinion of everyone in Arts & Science. Fortunately, no post on the anonymous forum is representative of the Arts & Science community. Contrary to popular belief, I don't think Artscis even have homogeneity in their support for Mary. In addition to the post slandering yourself and Ian, there have been posts criticizing Mary, Casey, and Tauseef (interestingly enough not Ashkan, and until his cessation of his candidacy, Aaron). I can assure you that on the anonymous forum there exists a healthy debate about platform points, candidates, as well as the requisite amount of trolling...much like MacInsiders. Much to my personal chagrin I think perhaps there's a bit more trolling on sassweb's anonymous forum than MacInsiders (complete with mini-memes).

tldr:
I don't think your charges of hypocrisy is unjustified - one post does not reflect the opinion of 200 students. As the election is upon us this isn't really for campaign purposes...it just alarmed me a little that sassweb might be misconstrued as a place for the plotting of a new world order (à la "aha! i know what you say on your secret forum dun dun dun) when in reality it houses diverse, if at times childish, opinions.

Best of luck in the next two days!

Hey Yang Lei,

I understand your concerns and being an occasional visitor to 4chan I can testify that anonymous forums can be interesting places that bring out the worst in everyone!

But "some" of the posts were made by people who posted with their first names and left enough details about themselves that ensured that they could be linked to an actual member of a campaign team with the same name. That really troubled us along with the fact that some of the information was stuff only a campaign member might have access to/know :S

But yeah I hope all that is behind us and we don't use that stuff to judge anyone anymore!

Tomorrow it should just be about the candidates as people and their platforms that makes everyone vote!
