They are sold in a variety of places. Walmart, Futureshop, Best Buy, Sears, The Bay, etc... I've seen some for 20$ and some for 90$.

Yeah checked out walmart a few days back and didn't find any with the laptop space in them. I guess BB and FS are the way to go.

2-strap bags are better because the one sided bags .
The one that I'm getting is from High Sierra, lifetime warranty ftw.

Like many others have been saying, I would say go with the kind of backpack that has two straps that go over your shoulders and actually rests on your back itself. Messenger bags that go across the body and sit at the hip can make your back and shoulder pretty sore after a while.
That being said, I'd go with a Dakine backpack. I've had mine since ninth grade and it's still holding up extremely well. They are super durable and come with a lifetime warranty (my brother sent his back without a bill and they gave him a new one, but I'd keep your bill just in case). And, depending on the style, some of them have a pocket in the main compartment where you could put a laptop. Mine is still strong after holding some pretty heavy books over the years. You can get them at just about any mall with a West 49 or Urban Trade.

The only thing I can add to this thread is not to go too cheap. Cheap bags, especially in University where you may be carrying 3+ textbooks and a laptop, will wear down real quick.

Definitely a backpack with a laptop compartment. Check out brands like The North Face ...they can be pricey but I think they are worth your buck. They are made to fit your back/shoulders, made out of recycled materials and come with a life time warranty. I have one for school and another I take hiking/canoeing....great quality anyways.... these people should pay me to advertise for them..

Roots backpacks tend to have laptop compartments too. One thing I'm going to point out is, are you going to be commuting? in that case, avoid bags with lots of straps, you don't want to get caught on something on the bus (potential safety hazard).

I have a Samsonite, which is the typical backpack that you carry on your back. Although it has a laptop compartment.
I find that when I use messenger bags, it really does strain your shoulders if you have alot of textbooks. So if you use messengers, I thinking packing light would be a good idea.
I had my eye on the: http://www.luggage.com/Ogio-108090.03-VK1607.html
Very good price, quite spacious, and you can find people reviewing it on youtube.
Very decent price too.

I got a Swiss Army Brand Regular Laptop bag for 34.99 from Winners(you could also get a columbia for the same price). Its much cheaper than some of the options recommended and its pretty sturdy with a life time warranty! If you are patient though you might be able to bag one of them in decent condition much cheaper from a Value Village. In Hamilton though Value Village is an hour each way trek from Mac by bus so its harder.
