laptop???
so i'm kinda computer illiterate. i dont know much about them
so are there any certain programs you need for first year??

I suggest Windows. It's a pretty good program.
Also, don't bother with Microsoft 2007. NO ONE uses Microsoft anymore. Everything XP or Vista.

office 2010 instead of 2007.
steam is absolutely essential. saves you/costs you a TON of money, depending on how you look at it
notepad was #1?! seriously... wtf?!
you won't need matlab unless you're in math/eng
so basically, you need:
Office 2010
Adobe Reader X
Firefox

AutoCAD, some sort of python IDE, foxit, chrome

Foxit? the PDF reader? How is that now? I switch from foxit to nitro after 2nd year because nitro had more free features at the time...

you are gonna need autodesk inventer suite(student version its free), also maple 14 and maplesim 4.0 unfortunately those are gonna cost money
