I bought one, it's pretty decent, the only downside is that it uses 2 usb ports. That's why I had to buy a powered USB bar.

Good thread, I've been looking for a good one for a while... I currently have one I bought for a dollar at the security garage sale (requires power ac power source and has two noisy fans)

Try Undervolting your laptop (Google "Undervolting" for the procedure, it's a little different for Intel vs. AMD processors). It means supplying less voltage to your processor, because the manufacturers actually supply more voltage than it actually needs, making the processor run hotter.

I've done it to my laptop, and it is much better than what any laptop cooling pad can achieve.

does this slow down the computer in anyway? or have some other side effect?

on a side note:
titles does have coolers (a bit pricy) but they have these cool chemical/thermal coolers which dont use fans but have like a phase change material which keeps laptop cool which was cool

and the canada computers store is a bit low on stock but has some good ones too for around 20$

nope not all, but the only thing that might be a little hard to get used to, is the fan noise!

This. Been using it for a while, cheap as hell, super quiet, little version of the Notepal U3 (Which is $30) and performs just as well. It even lets you stash the USB cord underneath it for easy carrying, etc. :p

Nope, doesn't slow down the computer. The only side effect that you will encounter is when your setting it up for the first time. It's a trial-and-error process to figure out what the lowest limit you can set the voltage to. Once you set it too low, your computer has a safety feature that 'crashes' your computer and displays the 'blue screen of death'. This is when you will know the lowest voltage setting, and you just simply reboot your computer.

I was a bit scared when I first heard about this too, but it just sounds more complex and dangerous than it really is. I'm glad I undervolted my laptop because my computer now runs 20 degrees celsius cooler than even when I was using a cooling pad. You'll also notice that the fan in your laptop won't have to run as hard as it used to.
