It uses DDR2 memory. Get DDR3.

note that battery technology these days cant keep up with power usage. thus if ur battery life is low, it is usually an indicator u have good hardware (gfx/processor). dont worry too much about power, just walk around with a powerbar
I would avoid buying an MSI laptop; not because all their laptops suck but when something goes wrong with it, its almost impossible to use the manufacturers warranty.

I have an MSI that is pretty good, Intel i3 processor with a 4gb RAM and 500gb HDD but the speakers fail in life and recently I've had a green line through the screen; which I'm assuming is dead pixels or something.
I took it into Staples where I bought it and they told me that they dont trust sending it in to the MSI tech place because they dont even know where it is/how they handle things. So now I'm waiting for the manufacturers warranty to expire so I can use my warranty with staples to get it fixed; meaning I have to wait until I have four weeks where I don't need it for school to give it to them.

I'm thinking of going with an Asus. They seem to be high quality make. Here are the ones i'm thinking of getting

for $650
http://www.superwarehouse.co m/ASUS...-B2B/p/1636019

for $660
http://www.superwarehouse.co m/ASUS...T-A2/p/1639396

for 449.99 (screen is non-gloss I think. I want a glossy one)
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...762&CatId=2509

for 643.99
http://www.shopbot.ca/pp-asus-ul30a-...ce-207080.html

Are the prices reasonable? and which is better?

I'm probably gonna get a new one after a couple years so would it be better to just go with a usual HP/Dell/Toshiba/Samsung/Sonic and save some money?

On what grounds are you able to recommend someone to not buy Dell?

Don't listen to this guy OP, Dell makes some of the best notebooks on the market.

I've had in this order: Dell Vostro 1710/Dell Latitude E6400/Alienware M17X and Dell has exceeded my expectations every time.

For the record, if your ignorant of the subject matter: dont try and push your ignorance on people asking for advice.

I second this...I've only had excellent experience with Dells.

I've had the opposite. I bought a Studio XPS 15 last year and experienced this with it:

- The keyboard/palmrest scratch the screen because of poor design
- The speakers buzz unbearably even at low volume
- The laptop overheats even when idle and the fans are always blowing because of poorly designed ventilation. The vent that blows out is completely blocked by the screen when the screen is open.
- The wifi card would turn off whenever I closed the lid/put it to sleep but wouldn't come back on when I turned the computer back on.
- The slot-load disc tray would neither read nor eject discs
- The F3 key was broken off when I first opened it after it was shipped to me.

I had it replaced partway through the year, and the second model they gave me had all of the same problems, except that the disc tray worked, the F3 key wasn't broken (lol) and the wifi card worked just fine. However, when they replaced my laptop they accidentally assembled it with some standard parts (not the upgrades that I paid for) -- so they sent a guy to my house to replace those parts, but they shipped him the same stock parts they put in the laptop TWICE.

Finally they replaced it with an XPS 17 L702X because they don't make the Studio XPS 15 anymore (wonder why). This laptop, out of the box, had a horizontal line of burned-out pixels in the screen. So I called Dell and they sent a guy with a new screen unit to replace it with, but the screen that they shipped to him was shock-damaged on delivery, which he only found out when he installed it, turned it on, and the screen looked like this (not my laptop, but visually similar): http://gakidooscomputerrepai r.com/...lcd-screen.jpg

So he put the old one in and Dell shipped me a SECOND XPS 17. I've had it for a month, it's never been moved outside of my house, and the same sort of horizontal line has appeared in the screen. Dell offered to refund my money minus all the tax I paid, my additional warranty money, and a 15% cost restocking fee... and that's just bullshit. I declined that offer. As it stands I'm gonna have to have a techie come AGAIN and put a fourth screen in.

That's bad effing luck.

EDIT: The night after I posted this, a second line of burned out pixels appeared in the screen while I was checking my email. EFFFFF.

And Dell's better if you're looking for catastrophic customer support.

Really it comes down to which sucks less.

Probably Sony.

You don't need to use customer support. In the 3 years I've had my Dell I've never once had to call them.
