i hate to open up a week old thread but im surprised no-one mentioned lenovo. They are not exactly gaming machines but in terms of reliability and performance/price, they are one of the very best.
Another thing i want to say is a 17+ inch laptop is ridiculous. You are never going to want to move that thing, and its battery is likely terrible. My 2 year old lenovo t500 still gets 6 hours on a charge on maximum performance.
out of curiosity i tried to build a computer in a price range similar to the once you have built.

You should note that this graphics card is a CAD card. The processor is very good though. It depends on what you mean by "game". A few tweeks and you can take about $300 off the price too. They have a 14 inch T series thats fairly powerful for about $1000 too.

What people have been saying on this tread is legitimate, look at tigerdirect and newegg, hands down the best places to get parts. I have purchased computers and computer components from these places, and they have turned out great.
Please, do not buy a mac. They are terrible machines, and by terrible, I mean they are so expensive for what you get. I'm very froogle, and the only viable option to get a mac is when you are dependent for HEAVY multimedia use, because of the software that is out there. The problem is that 99.9% of mac users do not utilize the strengths, so buying it becomes an utter waste of money. This is why I gripe so much about macbooks, because people just blindly buy it for the logo. A funny term to regard these kinds of people with are, "Isheep". Anyone with half a brain can compare specs in lets say and Asus, and a Macbook. Then compare prices, if the other half of your brain is operational you might realize that Macbooks are ginormous overpriced.
Besides that rant, I suggest Asus. They have great factory warranty, they have been around for a while, and quality is very good. I guess whatever laptop is on sale, and when specs are decent, go for that. Even if it is at futureshop, or bestbuy. Enjoy your new laptop whatever it may be! If it's a Mac, then...  |

@ lenovo, although the parts are nice and legit they have been bought out by a chinese company. even though all computer parts are made in china anyways, i wouldnt invest heavily in a lenovo lappy

Don't buy from TigerDirect... they overprice most of their stock. I remember buying a ram set for $ 25, and when I went back to get another a month later, the exact same set was $ 130. Really? Other time I went to price match a keyboard based on their policy, and when I showed them the ad they said "sorry, we only price match stores in our vicinity". After I asked them how they defined vicinity and didn't get an answer, I told them to **** off and left.

My roommate just bought all the parts for his computer today from Canada computers. I forget all the specs, but I know he got 8 gb ddr3 1066, a quad core i5 2.8 ghz, and everything else he needs, including a case for under a grand, taxes included. Gonna be pretty sweet when we put it together tonight.

He should have gotten 1600 MHz RAM. Memory bus-speed > all.
1066 MHz is pretty antiquated.

I also have to vouch for NCIX, ever since they've established their section in ontario it's been great. They often have great sales around the year. Pretty much that and Canada computers
