most integrated graphics card are actually really good and improve battery life. I have switchable graphics on my thinkpad and find i mostly use the integrated. Then again, i dont game.

I would say go for a graphics card if you can. Anything relatively new from ATI or NVIDIA should be good.
Since you're in engineering, you probably won't use your laptop much to take notes, so having ridiculously long battery life isn't that much of a big deal.
Although programs like solid edge can work with integrated graphics, it's a lot smoother with a real graphics card.

Buy a decent nVidia or ATi graphics card so it will last you a while.

Any midrange ATI or Nvidia will do better than fine. A Radeon HD 4650 would even be overkill for what you'd use your laptop for (unless you like gaming in high quality, then you'll need something much better, like a Radeon HD 5700 series at the very least).
