Linguistics 1A03
Alright, so if you're like me and you find languages interesting, then you will probably enjoy this course. You cover phonetics, phonology and morphology so I'll just give you a quick review on each of these units.

It sometimes depends on the professional school, but it would most likely be considered a humanities course.

Read the course outline and decide if it's interesting. Interest is a subjective quality.

Hey, in the course, did they do any phonetic transcriptions specifically of Egyptian Arabic (not MSA)?
So for example, how are these pronounced:
ممكن --> Is it /'mumkin/ or /'mʊmk ɪn/ or /'momken/ or some other ?
السلام عليكم --> Is it /ɪs: æl æ:mu ʕ ɑlekom/ or /ʕ ɑleɪkom/ or something else ?

With linguistics I think it really does depend on the individual taking the course. Before I took the course I heard from friends who struggled with the course that it was hard. But when I took the course I found it to be relatively easy- one of those courses where if you go to class and have at least a vague understanding of whats going on then you'll do well. After taking the course I found that I really like the subject and have since taken up more courses in linguistics. So really I think it depends on the person- if you have an interest in studying languages and if you have an interest in the English language itself then you're bound to like this course!

The examples used vary. On tests, they tend to give you somewhat vague languages that most students wouldn't be fluent in (presumably to make sure that most / all students approach the language just using tools they learnt instead of familiar methods of analysis). So, I doubt that Egyptian Arabic (or any form of Arabic) would be on one of the tests.
You may well have phonetics / phonology / morphology problems with Egyptian Arabic as the medium for tutorial or as lecture examples, of course.

Is there an access code for the textbook and study guide? Someone is trying to sell me the book and said that he'd include the access code...which seemed kind of odd.
