So lately, there has been a lot of talk of the upcoming Valentine's movie 50 Shades of Grey, a film that focuses on a character having a woman sign a contract to be his sub (at least that's what i've gathered from women who have read the novels). Now, the female population of the internet erupted today when a trailer for Magic Mike was released online, showing off the bodies of Channing Tatum, Joe Manganiello and others. It would seem that women are extremely excited for both of these films. However i find excitement to be completely hypocritical, when we live in a society in which the act of objectifying a woman's body is sexist, and a man making cat calls to a woman based on her physical appearance is a social faux pas.
We consistently hear that you shouldnt judge a woman by her body, but rather by her mind. So then how is it that a book in which a girl signs her body away to a man for his BDSM fantasies, is held in such high regards by the millions of women who have read the series? Using any excuse relating to sexual fantasies does not cut it in my opinion, as that would be completely hypocritical to the negative response men receive for treating women as sexual objects.
Moving on to Magic Mike 2, anyone who thinks that these movies exist for any reason other than to see Channing Tatum topless (or more perhaps?!
) is just fooling themselves. These movies are made so that women can sit in a room full of other horny females and collectively fantasize that Channing Tatum is actually grinding on their lap, rather than the hoochie he is with in the films. Wouldn't that count as objectifying men?
I guess all i'm saying here is, movies and literature like this make it hard for me to care to listen to the arguments of women who feel that men in some form or another sexualize or objectify them. I'm not trying to deny that men do it, but what i am saying is that if women are going to continue to accuse the male gender of these forms of behaviour, maybe they should also stop supporting media that do the exact same thing to men...
Nah im not suggesting that at all, it would make this world untollerable. Men look at women sexually, just the same way that women do to men. So rather than women hypocritically cracking down on men for this behavior, why dont we just all admit that we find each other sexy and move on with our lives lol.
Oh and p.s, sorry to anyone who came into this thread looking to fangirl over these movies. I guess we will just have to go and objectify Channing Tatum and Jami Dornan elsewhere lol
