Making Extra Money
Hey all

Everyone is thinking it... the smart ones are worried now, and the rest have it in the back of their minds

How can I make extra money on campus as a first year!? I am particularly picky about numbers... I know that, by the end of the summer, after I get a computer, I want a specific amount (At least) in my account. If I cant have that, I beat myself up about it until I get that much.

Any tips? Could I sell minutes on my computer for cheaper than SharcNet with my BEAST of a desktop ?

Any tips guys? I'm in Les Prince by the way, if that will mean anything.

Thanks!

Mike

Well,
There are a few ways you can go about making some extra money on campus. You can look into part-time jobs which are offered on campus such as at Commons, Bistro, the TimHortons' around campus.

http://sfas.mcmaster.ca/work_study/jobs.html

You can look around for more details.

If you're looking for something without much of a commitment, you should look into Psychology and Economics Experiments that happen around campus which you can get paid for.
Registering for Economics Experiments: http://socserv.socsci.mcmast er.ca/...blic/index.php

I'm not sure what you mean about selling minutes on your computer...

You could also check out OSCAR which is McMaster's Online Student Careers and Recruitment site - https://oscar.mcmaster.ca/mcauth/

They have listings for both full time and part time jobs. You can probably find something in Hamilton or even better, at McMaster.

I'd also recommend OSCAR, you can definitely find some good jobs on there. Another option is to look off campus; maybe try Boston Pizza and see if they are hiring.

P.S. What are your computer's specs?

yeah oscar is gonna have postings for the upcoming year soon. I applied for a summer term but I'm gonna have an interview for fall .. my friend who worked at bistro said it was relatively easy to get a job there because people are always quitting, it's also good because you can work around your schedule more easily.
good luck to you

sell your stuff, run errands, hey maybe even sell your soul!

i'd say trying out psych experiments is your best bet! there also kin experiments that pay well but they require a lot of commitment!

Oh yeah! I did an experiment with the Econ department, got like 25 bucks in cash after an hour. It was sweet.

OSCAR should be posting jobs on August 1st onwards, at this point you would also apply for Work Study on MUGSI.

Because you live in residence, you can also work as a Guest Registration Staff (GRS) on weekends in the various residence buildings. I can't speak to the amount of money you get or how good the job is (because I've never been a GRS), but I know the application process for that starts around September after you move in.

These all sound like great options. I like the psych and economics experiments. I was joking about the computer selling (unless of course it would work! But yea right..)

But the specs are going to be 12GB DDR3 RAM, 1 TB Hard drive, Intel Core i7 920 processor, 1 GB Video RAM.

Ill definately be checking out the less commitment ones for earlyi n the first year... The more committed ones seem better once I get comfortable with it all.

Thanks so far guys!

What in god's name do you need 12GB of DDR3 RAM for? Are you planning on rendering 5 full motion movies at once?

But yeah, those experiment are a good way to make some money for very little work.
