Because, for some reason, TAs are chosen based on the best grades, not the best ability to teach (in all programs, not just Engineering).
It makes sense to a certain point: someone shouldn't be teaching a course to someone else if they don't understand it. But it doesn't make sense because not everyone with 11's or 12's should be teaching anybody anything.

Believe it or not I got into engineering with 72% avg in gr.12.

You can also join co-op later. You don't need to be accepted into it right away.
