McMaster to York transfer
I'm in first year Mac Social Sciences-major in sociology. I'm thinking of transferring to York arts-major in criminology or law & society. List pros and cons. Mac is really expensive. I live in Toronto so I can commute to York. My ultimate goal is to go to law school, marking there is also easier. My marks are still relatively good mostly in the A to B range. I also like the social scene at York better because I'm south asian.

I don't care about York's rep. They have a wide selection for arts courses and I'm looking at going to Osgoode Hall law school.I would like your thoughts.

I know this is a Mac forum.

Hi there.

Every school has their pros and cons for sure. Biggest con for york (in public opinion) is their rep but even that is not a very big concern because York is one of the largest universities with thousands of students. Every university/degree is what you make of it, really. Only you can succeed yourself regardless of what school you go to. If you want to go into Law, they wouldn't discriminate against York students or any for that matter so that shouldn't be a concern.

I personally know many people who are at Mac for its good rep but university is about more than just the "rep."

I'd advise you to take summer school at York and see how you feel there and whether or not you like it and then base your decision on your personal experience, not what others tell you or what you have seen in a couple of visits.

That being said, I have heard positive things about their criminology program from friends. Also, I sort of do agree with you on the social scene, York is def livelier, it has a very lively university student life environment.

Also, about the whole rep thing- many people may disagree with me, but I have done extensive research on the internet, and have even asked an admissions officer at the University of Toronto, and sources have confirmed with the fact that ultimately, graduate schools do NOT consider a universities reputation when looking at applicants. What they do care about is grades, the MCAT (for medicine), or LSAT (for law), your personal statement, references, and work experience. I know many are going to dispute this point, and say that going to a more reputable institution is always better than going to a less reputable one, and I'm going to argue that this is only true AFTER you get out of graduate school, when seeking employment. Then again, by that time what is more important than where you studied for undergrad is much less significant than where you studied for graduate school...so in my opinion, based on what you've told me, I would say forget about reputation and go to York if you this that university is right for you. It really won't hurt your chances.

P.S. I'm considering med school. I've done research on York too. It seems like they produce a fair number of medical students going to Canada, U.S., and other foreign countries.

All the best

If you want to go to law school, are you sure criminology is good for you?

Criminology/Criminal Justice seems to score the lowest all the time.

Those are all relative statistics. One can still major in something like crim and score high on the LSAT. It depends on the person and how much preparation he put in.

I have about 12 friends at york who are all brown and have the easiest lives ever. If you want to get into a good law school you will need two things: good undergrad marks and high LSAT scores (90+) for you to do that you will need to take law programs, which mac doesn't offer. I also have a friend doing criminology at Ryerson if your interested? Weight your options I guess, but mac is a science university (atleast that is what I was told). Keep your marks in the 70s and transfer if you want a chance for law school.

you dont need a program with law to do well on the lsat, statistically those with majors in math, science (pretty much anything that has math in it) do best on the lsat because the test deals with a lot of formal logic which someone who has a soc sci background (excluding philosophy) does not have a lot of exposure to or experience dealing with. i took the lsat and the hardest thing for me to wrap my head around was trying to train my brain to think this way (im used to writing essays and other things)

If you understand http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6...teness_theorem, you will have no problem getting into Yale, provided you have 3.8-3.9 GPA

I don't trust teh averages that don't have teh stddev... :/

The criminology people could have a giant spear for their score graph, and the physics people could have a big pancake graph.

nah, who are we kidding
