Average ≠ Cutoff (unless of course every single person admitted to Life Science last year had an 88% average)

The averages are pretty high...engineering was 82% 3 years ago, now it's 87%, that's crazy!

actually they are cutoff averages. Meaning if you get an average below 88, then you won't get in. I assume this is what the university meant when they said they will be using these marks for admission.

I got into engineering this year with an over 87% average, but I only need to keep a 83% to stay admitted, and the official applicant package said mid 80's cut-off.

Well the link that the OP posted said 87 for engineering this year, but still 87 is really high compared to what it was few years ago!
Ohh and congrats on getting accepted Welcome to Mac Eng!

Woops...I only read that OP's description not the description on the site itself and came to the wrong conclusion. I thought it referred to the average of the average of the marks of students admitted rather than the top-6 average required for admission.
Sorry about that, those cutoffs (specifically Nursing, Kin, Life Sci and Engineering) are crazy high in that case.

[quote=hilton;369918][quote]Am I the only one that's annoyed at the Humanities/Social Science admissions average? like why a 75%/78%, why not just make everything 80%+ or by selection and that's it?

Are you serious?
There are different averages because there are a limited number of seats and because each program attracts different amounts of students... and ones of different skill levels...
Please. This is humanities we're talking about. lol
Also why do you care that idiots got in? What effect does that have on you?
|
Why do I care if idiots get in? Because I'm sick of seeing them in my classes/tutorials/whatever. So annoying O_O. Not to say that there aren't idiots in other programs, it just seems prominent in my classes.

Mid 80's cutoff? Mine was 80.
At least they're not like UofT/Waterloo who mass accept then mass kick out

Maybe they're just psych students trying to gauge your reaction to their pretend stupidity?

As someone who did take SATs and apply to American schools, I'd like to take a few lines to comment on this...
As for the 1 test determines who gets in, it's really a comparison to see whether the HS marks match the standardised test marks. A flag, of sorts, for biased marks, etc. SAT is supposed to tell whether someone is "university-ready".
Now, by the same token, does that mean a score of 40 on the MCAT makes me a wonderful doctor, or a high score on the LSAT makes me the next Atticus Finch? No...but it might serve as an indication of future success.
The SAT itself (don't know if this is relevant :.), is curved, so with majority of people writing will get ~ 500's, maybe low 600's. I know 600 is enough to get you into Mac...

Oh wow, the cutoffs got so high this year, and I thought it was an already high cutoff back when I was applying. Hopefully the amount of idiots on campus gets reduced c:
