I'm looking to apply for McWork for the upcoming summer, can anybody recommend any "good" positions that they have done before please?

Its a meaningless question; just apply to everything remotely relevant to your field/faculty and hope you get accepted.

There are few positions and a lot of applicants; just because you're 'in' McWork doesn't mean you have a job.

Make your resume up good, custom tailor a cover letter for each position and hope you get something.

i'm a little confused as to how this works....

so i went into mugsi and i applied but it seemed as simple as clicking "i accept"

is that really all you have to do? then wait for approval? where/when does the approval show up?

If you get OSAP, yes, that's all you have to do.
If you don't get OSAP, you will be asked to fill out more forms and hand them into the Financial Aid Office.

The form that pops up after you accept is what you take to your employer once your hired right?

Yup. You don't have to worry about that form until you're hired. Then your employer will ask you for it.

You don't need to be, but it's much easier if you are.

If you aren't eligible for OSAP, you can apply for McWork online and you'll have to fill out "budget sheets" to take to the Financial Aid Office. It's basically like a very short version of what you'd fill out on OSAP forms.

Personally, I wasn't eligible for OSAP. My dad was laid off the year before I applied and we didn't have much money - but it was a problem with OSAP because they considered my dad's income from two years prior. I printed a letter explaining my circumstances and stapled it to my forms. They were very nice and let me in the program. So if you have a circumstance that can't be explained in the forms, I suggest doing what I did (or going in and talking to someone at the office).

ive gone through and made a list of possible positions that i qualify for, however this list is quite extensive, i'm not sure how to approach this...

is it worth applying for as many as possible?

is it very competitive?

I would suggest applying to all of the jobs you are qualified for. It takes a looong time and it's very tedious, but it's worth it. Out of the 300 jobs availabe last year, I applied to 30 or 40, was asked to come in for interviews for 4 of them and I was offered all 4 jobs. The reason I only applied to 30 or 40 was because I was offered a job before I was through all my applications - I definately would have applied for more.

I don't know how competetive it is. It all depends on your resume and your experience. I had quite a bit of experience in the area that I was applying to, which is why I was offered those jobs.

Don't get discouraged and apply for everything you can! You don't want to look back in July, when you don't have a job, and think "Damn, I should have applied to more McWork jobs".

Would you suggest applying for a job that requires specific skills that you don't have?

It depends. Sometimes, job descriptions can sound very intense and maybe even a little exaggerated. Unless it's a job that you requires you to have a full knowledge of chemistry and you're in Philosophy (for example), I would say go for it. Sometimes I read job descriptions one time and think "Wow, I definately can't do any of that!", but when I read them again, I see that I do have the skills it's asking for.

Be honest in your cover letter and resume. If you don't have the skills they want, they won't ask you for an interview. No harm in trying.

The jobs are all on campus. It's best to apply early.
