Minor in Business
Hey everyone,

If you are currently pursuing a business minor, can you please tell me how you were notified that you had been accepted into the minor? I called the School of Business, and she said I would be emailed, but so far I have gotten no email and my course selection date is tomorrow.

Thanks

You apply for minors when you graduate. I believe business only allows a certain number of people to do it, so the first X number of people who put it on their graduation form get the minor. For other minors, there isn't a limit to the number of people who can get it. The DeGroote website specifically states that no application is required for a minor in business. You likely haven't been emailed since you aren't graduating and therefore have not applied to get the minor. When you register for courses doesn't matter at all.

Lauren is right. I asked business office. Basically if you aren't the first __ number of people to apply for it on your grad card you won't get that title and it would have all been for naught

oh ok, thanks. Do you guys know anything about the specialty minors like finance or accounting and financial management. I applied for those programs and do you know how students are notified? My course selection is tomorrow and I still don't know if I have been accepted or been denied

Everything you need to know about the Minor is business is here.

All you need to know is that:

i) As stated previously, you don't have to "apply" for a minor in Business. All you do is notify it on your graduation card and assuming you fulfill the requirements (i.e. you've taken the necessary 24 units), you will graduate with that designation. It's worth mentioning that minors don't appear on your diploma.

ii) There is no limit to the number of people that can receive a business minor in any given year, as that'd be an incredibly terrible idea, even by McMaster's standards. Could you imagine how pissed people would be if they completed all the courses for a minor, but because of some arbitrary cap on the number of people allowed to receive it, missed out?

The one line that causes people to think this seems to be this one:

Places in these courses will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
And all this is that enrolment in the courses that get you the business minor is limited to 40 people if you're not registered in a program that requires them (i.e. Commerce or Eng Management), meaning that unfortunately, you DO have to fight through Mugsi and Solar to get a seat.

I agree it's ridiculous...but Leeoku emailed the business office asking. I've heard this from others as well.

If I was in a position where I completed all the requirements for the business minor, and it wasnt noted on my transcript due to the cap limit, I would still put it on my resume and not care about what McMaster says. The bottom line is that you have the knowledge of all the courses. I wouldnt need a stupid little line on my transcipt saying "Minor in Commerce". Employers hardly look at these things with a magnifying glass, and if they even get the chance to see your transcript, they will see all of the commerce courses you have taken anyways.

I have also applied for the specialty minors (both finance and accounting) and haven't heard anything from them yet either.
