On Friday September 9, the McMaster Students Union (MSU) will be hosting its second annual Community Clean-Up and BBQ! This year, the event is a collaboration between the MSU, The McMaster Office of Sustainability, The McMaster Alumni Association and the Bay Area Restoration Council (BARC). As a result, it is meant to help build relationships between first years, upper years and community members. The event is set to begin at the edge of BSB field closest to the MUSC/Mills Plaza. Teams will be assigned clean-up routes, materials and itineraries at that point. After garbage collection, all teams will return to their start-up location for judging and garbage drop-off. Following that, there will be a BBQ at TwelvEighty for all participants sponsored by the McMaster Alumni Association. Judges include our very own Ward Councillor, Brian McHattie, MSU Vice President (Administration) Katie Ferguson, and MSU Vice President (Education) Alicia Ali.
For those competing for the Residence Cup
If you are a residence/SOCS rep,
There will be sign-up sheets with the ROA of your building. Teams are to be composed of 2 reps and 8 students. These sheets should be submitted to the MSU Main Office by Thursday September 8 at 4pm. You can also register teams by sending a list of team members and e-mails to
[email protected].
If you are a first year student,
Contact one of your residence reps if you are interested in participating!
For Upper Years & Community Members
If you are interested in participating, please send an e-mail to
[email protected] with the names and e-mail addresses of all team members. Teams will be limited to 10 people.
There will also be a contest for most creative piece of garbage, so don’t forget to consider that when cleaning. Teams will receive points for engagement, team spirit and amount of garbage collected. This event is weather dependent, and an e-mail announcement will be sent out on Thursday September 8 at 5pm if the event is due for cancellation.
Last but not least, don’t forget to have fun! This is a chance for students to improve community relations by engaging in the city and showing the investment that McMaster students have in their local community.
