Congratulations MSU President-Elect Matthew Dillon-Leitch
From
MSU News:
Following more than two weeks of campaigning and three days of voting, the 2011-2012 MSU President-Elect has been declared: Matthew Dillion-Leitch won the election on the fourth round of balloting, with 52% of total valid votes.
Voter turnout was up this year over last, with approximately 25% of eligible McMaster undergraduates participating in this election. Last year’s MSU Presidential election garnered 22.5% of the population, while the 2009-2010 election saw only 12.5% voter turnout.
The election and referenda results have been validated by the Elections Committee, however results are considered unofficial for the time being, as all candidates have five (5) business days to submit an appeal.
In addition to choosing the next MSU President, students were asked to vote on five referendum questions. In summary, the results are as follows:
Constitutional Amendments: PASSED
Levy of 35¢ per student towards Engineers Without Borders: PASSED
Continuation of HSR Bus Pass at 145% of monthly rate: PASSED
Health Plan: PASSED
- Increase the Health Plan fee levy to $55 and maintain current coverage of 80% of
prescription drug care, indexed to inflation.
Dental Plan: INVALIDATED
The Elections Committee invalidated the results of the Dental Plan referendum. The election was not run in accordance with the Bylaw 10 – Section 7.1 and it was impossible for the Elections Committee to determine what the results would have been had the preferential system been used.
This is unlike the Health Plan referendum, wherein the Elections Committee was able to accurately determine the results of the referendum had it utilized the preferential system. The Student Representative Assembly (SRA) must now determine when the Dental Plan will face a new referendum. It will likely run concurrent with SRA General Elections, to be held in March.
