I won't lie, I really feel like it was a popularity contest.

Congratulations MDL.
I voted for him but the other Matt was my second choice, I thought they both made a good case.
All elections are a popularity contests. The hope though is that that popularity has a basis in something important and relevant to the job at hand.

The dental plan was thrown out because the bylaw says any election or referendum with more than 2 opions needs to use a transferable vote system so that one of the options receives 50 of the vote. Both the health plan and dental plan used a single selection vote system, but the health plan had one option that got over 50% of the vote, so it was ok. The dental plan most not have had any of the three options get over 50%, and so it failed.

Wow lot of sour grapes over the fact it was a Humanities student that won.
MDL had people on his campaign team from every Academic Division. Voting for the President shouldn't be based on what faculty the candidate is in, anymore than it should be based on the candidate's looks.
I'm also amused by the suggestions that MDL won because of his looks. Do you have that little faith in the quarter of students that cared enough to vote?
This was a civilized election and there were many fine candidates. I was not at all reluctant to list Matt Wright as my second choice and had MDL not ran I likely would've joined Wright's team. So please guys, don't get nasty now. It's time to work together for McMaster students.

As someone who ran the polling stations, I can safely say yes.

I'm a bit curious as to what people said or did to make you feel like this election was won by looks.
The people who I personally talked to about the elections certainly gave it far more thought than "Oh gee MDL is cute, I'll vote for him..." (And besides which, its not like Matt Wright and Alicia are bad looking people)

Matt Wright ran a good campaign, and had a very realistic platform; I think he would have done a good job. And like Alasdair said, had MDL not been running I would likely have supported him. But if you've ever worked with MDL on any of the projects he's taken on in the past, you'd understand why he is the best candidate for the job. He works harder than almost anyone else on SRA, and gets results because of it. And it helps that he never limited his projects to being within the MSU, and has worked with almost every faculty society at various points. He had a lot of support from involved students, even if most of it was from people involved outside of the MSU.
I did hear quite a few people saying they were voting for MDL because of his looks, but it wasn't the majority. Almost everyone I talked to who was voting for him did it because he had by far the best class talks. It wasn't just that he's such a passionate speaker though, it was that he actually talked to students while he was waiting to speak. Most candidates just stand there and wait, MDL actually approached students. And he won a lot of people over that way.
