The whole MSU elections process is deeply flawed. The fact that SRA members with a stake in the outcome sit on the committee is the first problem. (Which is why I asked about vote totals in JHE.)
However, in this case, the problem here is the Elections Committee has too much direct power.
At many other student unions, the Chief Returning Officer deals out fines.
This is done during the campaign. (An example of this is Western where two candidates
have been assessed with violations during the campaign)
Candidates can appeal those fines (appeal mechanisms vary, some are good {McGill, UAlberta, UBC) others are okay and then some are horrible) and things are much smoother.
Other than verification of expense reports, the committee should have nothing on its plate but counting ballots at the end of voting.
