Because GOM is the player of choice for watching all the nerdy action, (complete with cheering fangirls in the audience).

Ah I see, but no, that's not the reason I use it. I like how it looks and the fact that it opens instantaneously. I also like the shortcuts to control sound, tracking, brightness, hue, saturation. It makes it really easy to quickly adjust the video for optimal viewing pleasure.

As someone who considers themself to be a "computer person" (I'm the guy in my circle who fixes everyone's computer) I'd have to say yes, use an anti-virus. I use Trend Micro Internet Security, one of the best anti virus programs available. Along with my regular maintenance and general computer know-how, I've managed to keep my XP machine running faster than ever (I've actually increased it's speed since I first got it in 2006 by fixing some things in the registry), and I have been able to keep my computer down to under 1 reformat per year, which is not bad for XP.

Laptops are great for university, but I'm dying to build a desktop... I'm sick and tired of not being able to upgrade my hardware .

Also, I'm seeing some Apple fanboyism here, so I just want to balance that out with this:

Less of Apple, and more of EVERYTHING ELSE!

I'd kill for a bird to come crap a $4000 check on my lawn so I can go build the desktop of my dreams.

Also, me and Vista don't play nice...so I'm sick of not being able to (reasonably) buy a laptop with XP on it and instead having to downgrade...despite owning 6 or 7 Windows XP Licenses I might add.

I don't get how people even come across viruses or self-installing adware these days. If you use firefox (basically anything aside from IE), all the "bad" websites can't self download adware to your computer when you view them. If you can identify bad files (small file size and vague description of what you're looking for is normally a good hint) and remember to unclick things like "Yes! I want this stupid tool bar!" when you install things, you're pretty much set.

I'd rather save cycles on my computer by knowing those few basic facts, rather than installing anti-virus.

In reality though, the answer to everything is Linux . The GNOME interface (although kind of bloated) looks far more epic than Windows can ever dream to be.

I don't know how much I'm liking Windows 7 so far. I like how it feels more stable than Vista, but I don't like how they "simplified" everything.

Also, randomly one day while using it, my windows gadgets just stopped working, and report an error every time I try to start them up.

I went through all the registry fixes... and still nothing. I liked the weather gadget :(.

Frig... I wish game developers would just make everything for Linux also. Then I could ditch god damn Windows.

Great Article!!! I've learned so many of these things that hard way... :( Definetely back up regularly. It only takes that one time where you think "oh it won't happen, I'll do it next month" for your laptop to fail on you...

Good job Bushra!

Try "The KM Player" If you think VLC is complicated, wait until you see this bad boy.

I personally use K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. Once installed, you can use your normal media player to play anything. Now my Windows Media Player plays all my DivX, Xvid, RMVB, MKV, FLAC and OGG files That way you don't have to adapt to a new interface.

Tsk tsk tsk... everyone knows you only install K-Lite to add more codecs to VritualDub. Why would anyone want to use WMP?! :o
