National Aboriginal Day – June 21st
National Aboriginal Day is a day of recognizing and celebrating the cultures and contributions of First Nations, Métis and Inuit people of Canada. There is celebration through dance, song, and theatrical performances.
This day is a great opportunity for all Canadians to learn more about Aboriginal people and their contributions to Canada.
Background:
On June 13, 1996, the Governor General of Canada Roméo LeBlanc proclaimed June 21st to be National Aboriginal Day. However, there was interest in declaring June 21st National Aboriginal Day prior to that year. For instance, the Assembly of First Nations made the suggestion in 1982.
Why June 21st?
Many Aboriginal groups mark this date as a time to celebrate their heritage. It was also chosen because of the cultural significance of the summer solstice which is the first day of the summer and the longest day of the year.
