i need help with first year courses!
okay so i am coming into mac as a life science student and i have a few questions regarding the courses at mac, i have been getting mixed feedback about taking physics 1b03 or 1L03 , some say that 1L03 is a waste of time but others say that 1B03 is too hard to start with.
i also want to choose some easy gpa boosters as electives, i heard that eco is eaym 1B03 or 1BB3, so im not sure which cuz i havent taken the course in high school! also i heard med physics is alright, 1E03, as well as astronomy 1F03 or philosophy 1B03. i need some suggesstions and opinions please! thank you

for your physics 1b03/1l03 dilemma - > http://www.macinsiders.com/showthrea...6.html?t=43396
generally you would take econ 1b03 first term and then 1bb3 second term, and yes they are both relatively easy to understand and get good grades in even if u havent taken them in highschool
dont know about the others, though i dont think medphysics 1e03 could be considered a bird course but i havent taken it so i wouldnt know for sure.

If it's an intro class, it doesn't really matter if you've taken it before or not in high school.
ECON 1B03 and 1BB3 are really easy, even if you've never dealt with the material before.

You can take either or both. Up to you.
1B03 is Micro so more focused within an individual household and such.
1BB3 is Macro which is more the nation's economy as a whole.

Regarding electives, it's really up to you. I would HIGHLY recommend taking something based on interest and not merely that some people have said it's easy. If you have no interest in the subject, you're less likely to study it and you won't end up doing well. But anyway, have you checked the course reviews here: http://www.macinsiders.com/forumdisp...s-98.html?f=98 They're really useful in seeing what others thought about the course and whatnot

Physics 1L03 deals with the absolute basics like vector addition and unit conversion. Don't waste your time.
When they say it's for people who never took physics in high school, they mean it.

Unfortunately due to varying marking systems across differnet high schools, your previous grades can't really be used as a good indicator of how you will find university courses.
IMO PHYSICS 1B03 is a great deal of review and if you keep up with the work, it can be a fairly easy course.
That being said, it's not a course that you can slack off in, I know this from personal experience.

In addition to this, I think most courses that are "hard" can be made bearable if enough effort and time is put into it... some more than others obviously, and given that the prof/T.A's don't mark like douches.

I know many people who took Physics 1L03 who said it was a waste of time, and who DID waste their time for taking it. If you took high-school physics it's completely unnecessary. Since many medical schools require a year of physics with lab components, 1L03 does not count towards this (it has no labs!). So now they all had to waste an elective in taking 1B03 in second year and then moving on to take 1BB3 or 1BA3.
Honestly, physics 1B03 is largely review. The first midterm deals entirely with kinematics only, and you never even get into electricity or magnetism through the whole course. The only new material is perhaps a little bit about wave interference (depending on how much you learned in high school), two variable functions for travelling waves (not really that difficult...), and some relatively simple stuff on fluid dynamics (simple equations.. There are a couple mindbending questions on the online assignments, but 2-3 questions over 10 assignments is essentially nothing). Coming from a person who absolutely HATES mathematics, I still managed to get an 11 in Physics 1B03 so unless you are AFRAID of physics, don't worry about it.
I took Astronomy 1F03 in first year and loved it. Anyone with knowledge of simple physics should do great in this class, as long as you show up and put mild effort into studying. From my experience, the practice problems were far harder than anything that showed up on the midterm or the exam. I finished with a 12. Overall I'd say its a fascinating course with a relatively low workload, great for an elective (especially for a science student!)
