				Nick Bontis: Ontario's best lecturer?

Nick Bontis is in the running for the title of "Ontario's best lecturer" - and you can vote!
FEBRUARY 25th 2008
What happens when you combine education and Canadian Idol? Well... it appears you get a TVO produced competition for Best Lecturer.

Nick Bontis, associate professor at the Degroote School of Business, has recently been named one of 10 finalists competing in a competition called "Big Ideas' Best Lecturer Competition 3", hosted by TVO.

With your support, Bontis could take the title of "Ontario’s Best Lecturer 2008", and also win a $10,000 TD Meloche Monnex scholarship for McMaster!

Lectures from the finalists will be aired on TVO, Saturdays from 4 to 6 pm (repeated Sundays from 4 to 6 pm), for five weeks until March 30. The voting will then take place online at tvo.org or by phoning toll-free: 1.866.281.3536.

You can watch Bontis's lecture on Saturday, March 8 or Sunday, March 9 from 4-6 p.m. on TVO. Then vote from 5:45 p.m. on Saturday until Monday at noon.

After submitting their grades for the professors, online voters can also fill out an entry form for their chance to win a 50” widescreen plasma HDTV and home theatre system.

Viewers grade professors appearing in a given week on a scale of 1 to 100 in three categories seen below: - Clarity and Coherence: Did viewers follow the theme of the lecture and understand its main points?
 - Energy and Performance: Was the viewer engaged by the lecturer's manner and style?
 - Confidence and Authority: Does the lecturer convey confidence and mastery of the subject?
The competition plays an important role in raising awareness about the province's great educators. For those who don't know about TD Meloche Monnex, they provide home and auto insurance and are a supporter of Ontario university alumni.

It appears some people don't approve of the idea behind the competition.

Update for everyone, Dr. Bontis did not win. But he did get really close to the top. I think it's good that professors are recognised for their work and commitment to making learning fun and engaging. Obviously the professor doing this the best (having high popularity) would get more votes and ultimately win.

For all prospective first year students: he's leading a session for the summer orientation days...so you'll get to see his amazingness then.
