No labs/tutorials during the first week?
Just to confirm, definitely no labs or tutorials during our first week (Thursday and Friday) of class right?

I wouldn't make a blanket statement like that...it is very likely there would be no labs/tutorials during that period.

Yea thats true, unless you have a lecture lets say on thursday and the prof specifically tells that the tutorials start on friday (Last year it did happen with me for one of my courses). But surely no labs will take place.

Usually you wait until after you have your first class. The prof will likely tell you more afterwards.

That's not true, Bio 3u03 had labs the first week.

^^I don't think it was supposed to happen that way.
TAs don't even have their finalized TA assignments until the beginning of welcome week...I doubt we'd be expected to put on a tutorial 4 days later, particularly when that's course selection / supervisor meeting time.
So no, there won't be tutorials on the thursday/friday.

It was a second term course, all the materials were already prepared in the lab manual. Plus, it was graduate students who have all taken Bio 3u03. It didn't take much work on behalf of the grad students.
Pretty much, anything after the first class is fair game. For example: if you don't have class until Monday, then you probably won't have tutorials/labs until after your Monday class.

To be fair, I meant to reply to saukalra, your reply went up as I was typing mine out.
But needless to say, 2nd term is vastly different from 1st term (which is what myoozik is inquiring about) in terms of the advantage of having some prep time over the winter break.
Remember, TAs need time to plan things out too. (Professors have been planning your courses since mid-June...as I mentioned, TAs don't find out their assignments for certain until Welcome Week)
Often times TAs are flying in from other parts of the world / country too, so they need to get settled, work out their finances, etc. in addition to the stresses of being a grad student and running tutorials.

Oh, misunderstanding since there were arrows pointing to my post.
In most cases though, labs (and the prelab preparations) are mostly run by the lab coordinators. From my experience, TAs are there if there's any questions about the procedure/make sure that nothing gets broken.
I still think my "Go to the first class and find out before planning anything during lab/tutorial time" is the safest way to go. For example, genetics had a tutorial in the first week. It's more likely to happen if the first day of class is earlier on in the week.

That's so awesome, we'll have enough of a hard time adjusting to classes and everything around us, we definitely don't need labs and tutorials in the first few weeks of school >.<

Yep, plus everything will be explained in your first class. Your professor will tell you when labs start.
