In January. But it's not too late to find something, you'll just have fewer "nicer" options.

nope, shes right. people start looking in january (maybe even december) for september. its cause most leases are 12month leases so they start in may

but i know people who have found places up until july. you definitely still can find a place.
its a risk, but actually the later you find a place the more likely you are to get an 8month lease

If you are in a large group it is too late. All houses with 5-6 rooms tend to be taken by reading week. If you are going as a single then you are a bit late but not horribly so. you should be able to find something, but you have to be quick. By the end of march there won't be much good stuff (if any) left.

Good thing I don't have to look for a house.. I wouldn't have known any of this if I was a first year student; I would just assume I can get a decent place in the summer!

also I notice you are zeroth year student. landlord typically rather give leases to 2nd or 3rd year students. You are going to have look good to stand a better chance

Real estate =/= renting...

But yeah, you should really get on it ASAP.
