Labs consisted of presentations, debates and discussions.
The first "lab" was a walk in Cootes Paradise where we had to write down the names of 10 plants and animals we came across in the woods. Pretty easy and fun! This assignment was worth 10% of our mark. The class average was about 91%!
The second lab was called "6 degrees of separation" where we put in a group of 7/8 ppl (this was our group for the whole semester) and we had to find 5/6 things that separated 2 items. For example we had to find the connection btw coke and albatross. The objective of the presentation was to show how everything is interrelated in the environment and how our actions have profound effects on animals/environment further down the line.
The third lab was about the BP oil spill. Each group took on a different role (BP, Researchers/NGOs, the locals). This lab was in the form of a debate/rebuttals. This was my favourite lab because we got learn about all the screw-ups BP has made since the 80s.
The fourth lab was another debate about whether or not to sever the connection between Lake Michigan and the Illinois River...electric barrier, carp.
The fifth lab was really chillax. The theme was "living simply". The three topics were simplicity circle project, story of stuff, eating locally.
Presentations were encouraged to be creative. ie skits and stimulating discussion among peers. Presentations were 40 min long/group.The first 20 min of your presentation was were your group presented, the next 20 min was where your group asked the class questions to stimulate discussion. Presentations were 40 mins long because there were only 3 groups per tutorial.
Overall, I felt like I learned more from tutorial discussion/presentations than going to lecture.
I enjoyed the tutorials even though they were a lot of work.
Flipside, labs (aka tutorials) were only every other week and ran up to the full 3 hours.
All the work for this course comes from the labs. Without the labs, this would be the easiest course ever.
