According to that websites, if all the grants someone already has received/will receive in total is for example 3500. They will get 3150-1600 = $1550 rebate? So that amount will be deducted from what I owe the government (provincial or federal?).

The difference in your example should be 1600-3150 = some negative number, which means you don't get any extra money since you are already receiving grants. So basically you can get up to $1600 if you are getting less than that now. If you have any more now, you won't be getting anything from this new grant.

Ahh okay I was replying to this

You know, I wonder what effect this will have on tuition costs... if the university knows that each student will automatically have 1600$ extra, whats to stop them from closing the gap and just increasing fees?
|
I thought you were asking if McMaster can just increase base tuition by 15-20%. If you meant the other fees like Athletics and Supplementary; according to the Ancillary fee provincial protocol the University has to conduct a student referendum in order to levy or increase such an additional fee on students so we'll definitely know about it.

Didn't mean to say tuition, the word was just in my head and it magically appeared in my post, my bad
Edit: wait, they have to basically call a vote saying 'hey guize, its it alright if we make your tuition bigger?'?

No, he was referring to supplementary fees such as the ath&rec fee.

rebates
to be honest, im happy for the people who can receive this, but for those whose families make over 160 000 it kinda sucks.. my parents decided to pay for most of my education but not all, and i have to pay rent on my own.. i cant even sign up for osap because of this..

OSAP has the same issue, though. And they also failed to take into account the number of students in university in a family for this $1600 grant...a family where the parents make $150000 and have one child in university/college will get the grant, but a family where the parents make $170000 and have four kids in university/college won't.

Also just an update for the earlier discussion about how students will use this money for other uses or wastage. I've heard strong rumors that starting Fall 2012, the Grant will just directly come off your Tuition Bill before September 1st payment deadline. The payout in cash is only for the half year Winter 2012 term.

I'm actually not sure about that. I've been told it should just give you all the money in January because that would make sense but I don't know.

is anyone who already picked up their osap able to confirm how the rebate is being issued?
is it an actual rebate credited to the student/school account... or are tehy just deducting the amount from loan owed?
