I'm pretty sure they're allowed to do that, according to university policy. The only option I can think of is to go to the ombuds office (2nd floor student centre). They can advise you of your options, set up a meeting with the prof, etc. However, if it is completely allowed according to university policy (you should probably read the policy on academic dishonesty), then there's not really anything anyone can do. At least it won't go on your transcript.

I would say go meet with your prof in person, bring your essay and any resources you used, etc. If you can't sort it out there, then go to the Ombuds office on the second floor of MUSC and they can tell you what your options are at that point.

Set up a meeting immediately, if they contest it, go to ombuds ASAP!

One freaking sentence?!!? That prof is a freaking douche.
Please explain your situation to your professor. Shed a few tears (maybe that'll soften him up). I don't know this is a horrible situation, but I'm sure there has to be a way to fix this.
Good luck to you and I hope it all works out (and I truly mean that)

Well that sucks. Try talking to your prof.
Is there anyway to complete this course during the summer? Maybe at another university or even online?

Talk to the professor ofcourse but if that doesnt work out, get the director for the department involved and the ombuds office. You shoudnt take this lightly, if all else fails, maybe even get legal help. Also make sure there is nothing going onto your transcript.

TAs don't have the authority to do that. Their responsibility is to bring any cases of suspected plagiarism to the prof or instructional assistant, who then deals with it. In many cases, the TAs aren't even aware of the outcome, particularly if it happens near the end of term. However, if it was one sentence then I suspect it came up through turnitin, if that was being used...
