Actually, they were all mandatory courses for my program.

I couldnt care less about electives.

E-mail the department; i.e. go on the mcmaster website and look for the department that governs that particular course. You'll want to look for the e-mail of an academic advisor or something similar.

If you require a course to get your degree you're seeking (it isn't an elective course where you have a choice to take something else that may be open) then usually exceptions can be made so that you satisfy your course requirements. Just because a course is showing up as full does not mean it's full forever.

I read this in some random McMaster document but it was pretty old so I don't know if this is still true. The document was from the early 2000s.
I dont think this is any longer true. I just recently emailed the department about a course i absolutely NEEDED to be able to graduate on time and i was declined. They said if it doesnt open on solar theres nothing they can do about it. So im sure the seat reserving thing doesnt apply and now im screwed as are a lot of other people im sure.

No: Sometimes you just get helped by really impatient people who jerk you around. My Math 1A03 prof explicitly stated that Math 1AA3 would appear as "full" on SOLAR but there were plenty of seats for people who wanted to take it, they just had to email the stated person before the stated date. This was during the term as well, when there is a lot less flexibility and most people are already set on Term II courses.
Email them again and go in person. Easy to reject pixels, hard to reject a face.

Hopefully more slots open over time.

I'm not sure whether some others I'm taking are going to be full or not. If one is in Life Science, can he/she get into all Life Sci courses by asking/telling the department?

EDIT: Oops, just read Jeremy's post. So even if I'm in Life Science II, for example, Life Sci 2F03, 2H03, 2EE3, aren't 'required', they're just from the course list. And thus I'm not guaranteed those courses? Crap.
I've been able to get in the empty seats for about 5 or 6 full classes so far, and they've all been electives. Most of them were Philosophy, which wasn't required for my Pol Sci degree. Some of them were about a week before classes started, and some of them were a few AFTER classes started! I guess it depends on who you get at the department though. The ladies at the Philosophy office are very friendly.
I would suggest going to talk to them in person, and waiting until SOLAR is closed for all students. If you email them, they might ignore you. And if you ask now, they'll probably say "Keep trying until SOLAR closes"

I don't think anyone should be stressing about full classes right now. School doesn't start for over two months. That's TONS of time for people to change their mind and switch in and out of classes. In my first and second year, I didn't get into a single class that I actually wanted or needed until a few days into the school year. Keep trying on MUGSI, the classes you want will open sooner or later.

Oh wow, that's kind of stupid. I would send some major complaints if you don't get into the course. It's not fair if they don't allow you to graduate because that means you have to pay more money. It's like extortion.
