Psychology 1xx3
Psychology 1XX3 is the second psych course you would normally take in first year after 1X03. In this course, we focus on development, evolution, neuroscience and behaviour.

There was one midterm which covered Development and Evolution and Neuroscience 1 and 2. In my opinion,...

all say thanks to sinthusized for this post.

Compared to 1XO3, I liked this course a lot better. Since it features more "biology"-based material, I found that the answers to the questions were a lot less ambiguous and were pretty straightforward as long as you know your stuff. There were a few difficult concepts like colour perception, but if you watch it a few times and clarify with your TA or the discussion boards, you should be fine.

There was one awkward situation with courseware though. I, being one of the people who found courseware in 1XO3 useless, did not bother purchasing any for 1XX3. Apparently a mistake; there were about 5 questions or so from that material on the midterm. After being scared into thinking that I needed to know that stuff, it turned out that there were no questions from the courseware on the final exam. I'm really not sure how Dr. Kim wants to do it this time around since the usefulness of courseware was a major topic of debate.

Generally, this was one of my favourite courses in 1st year, and I'd definitely recommend people to take it.

PS: I just wanted to reiterate a note that was pointed out before: SAVE THE MODULE URL'S! In case you decide to procrastinate, THIS MAY SAVE YOUR LIVES COME MIDTERM TIME!

I think the final exam did have some courseware questions, wasn't the Gate Open/ Gate closed model of pain perception only covered in the courseware? Maybe I missed it in the lectures.

It was also covered as the last item in the Chemical Senses lecture.

Psych 1XX3
The live lectures were interesting, and well done, considering (I believe) it's their first year to utilize them.

Compared to Psych 1X03, I honestly found the midterm to be a joke - it was much easier. I believe that partly because there was more biology, therefore less ambiguity. Often in Psych 1X03 I felt as though there were two equally good answers, and so I would get questions wrong where I could potentially justify why I might be correct.

There's less of that in Psych 1XX3, though. The exam was also relatively easy, and did not seem to encompass the level of detail learned in the lectures - however, don't assume you don't have to know it, because I'm sure some questions were made easier if you studied.

The cheat sheet helped, because the material after the midterm was indeed overwhelming, but to be honest it's unlikely one will refer to it very often. I had friends who didn't bother using one and I believe, did fine.

This course was much, much better than it's predecessor. I felt that the material was much more interesting, but then again, I'm very interested in neuroscience and sensory processes, and these may not be for everyone. I'd be wary of taking this course unless you do have a science background because even though you don't rely on a lot of prior knowledge, it helps to have a scientific "mind" or "point of view" when dealing with this material, and this is best acquired by experience in past science courses.

The first midterm was fairly straightforward as long as you studied well. The exam was very fair as well -- there were 3-4 questions that were pretty difficult/ambiguous, but this was balanced out by many questions that were much less difficult. Also, the live lectures were always very interesting, so I'd recommend going to them even if it's just for the sake of interest. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this course for science majors, but I'd think carefully about taking it if you were in a non-science program.

Full notes for Psych 1XX3 (Winter 2010 - Dr. Kim; these notes, found on DC++, are from 2009, but are still very useful to have)

Yeah, 1XX3 was more interesting, but 1X03 had easier concepts.

For people interested/reading: 1XX3 is mostly the science side of psych, while 1X03 is the social psych side. Make sure you know which on in lv II you are interested in (if you apply) since there are two psychs here.

A lot of memorizing but very straighforward and easy if you keep up with the web lectures.
The group project...they're very picky with that but if you ask a lot of questions and make sure you're on the right track, it's no big deal.
This course is more science-based than 1x03 but is interesting.

When we had to do the group essay, we had to hand in a detailed outline, which was marked quite brutally...especially the evolution portion of the essay. I would say that there should be group input on the evolution part of the essay, because it can be tricky =/

This course is really great for deciding whether you're more interested in PNB or biopsych. If you enjoy this course more than you did 1X03, biopsych is probably the better option.

I really enjoyed the group essay - even though it was difficult, it was interesting and I ended up doing very well on it. It was a good review and different outlook on a lot of anatomy terms (since I'm in Kin)

Highly suggest this course!

I really enjoyed this course over the first one 1x03. It focused more on the biological aspects of psych, but if you're into that over social psych then you'll like this one better too. Most people tend to feel the same way

There is a group presentation which isn't too bad at all, as long as your group members are actively contributing... This year, I believe they took the essay out, so now it's just weekly quizzes, readings, modules, and the presentation..etc

speirac likes this.
