Psychology 1xx3
Psychology 1XX3 is the second psych course you would normally take in first year after 1X03. In this course, we focus on development, evolution, neuroscience and behaviour.

There was one midterm which covered Development and Evolution and Neuroscience 1 and 2. In my opinion,...

I really enjoyed 1xx3, much more than 1x03. I do have a bit of a background in Psych so maybe it was just repetitive for me...Anyhow, the neuroscience and psychopathology units were awesome, and were very well instructed by the TA and Dr. Kim. He is very straight forward and makes sure you know the concepts that are crucial for overall understanding. I got lazy on the weekly tests and would rush through the material. These tests are worth overall 30% of your mark, so make sure you prepare! They are a little difficult but they engage you with the material instead of just recalling information. Experimetrix (4 credits worth) is worth 8% of your final grade so make sure you do them to take that percentage off the weight of your final, which is 60%! And, participation marks (including the presentation) are easy grades, so go to tutorial. OVERALL: Great class.

This course was very interesting, you learn A LOT in this course. I was surprised by the amount of content it had, to be honest, I felt like the amount of content I was learning in 1XX3 was way more than biology. This course is about the neuroscience of psychology and gives you an introduction to a variety of topics such as audition, chemical senses, hunger, etc.
A lot of people in Life Science say Psych 1XX3 is easier than Psych 1X03 because it relates more to Life Science. I disagree, although I do agree that it may be on the same level of interest of 1X03 which is very high.
The reason why I found this course so much harder is because there is A LOT of content to know, compared to Psych 1X03, where I only studied a couple of days for the exam, I had to start early for this exam because there was too much content that you needed to drill into your brain.
You’re top 10/11 tests are marked, which means you only get to drop one, so there is less leeway in your mark compared to 1X03 where your top 10/13 tests were marked. Experimentrix is available
Every week, you have 1-2 modules to watch, and they go into a lot of detail. Modules are about 30 minutes long each, but I found that going through each one took about an hour. I rushed through the modules, if you actually spend a lot of time each week drilling the content in your head or just rereading it, it will help you a lot during exams!
Because quizzes were open book, I never bothered to really learn the material every week, rather I would just take really good notes. Come exam time, I actually learned the material and I realized that if you did that every week, come exam time, you’d be better prepared for the exam.
I found the 1XX3 exam pretty difficult. There were a lot of questions I was unsure about, and although the questions weren’t as specific as the quizzes, you still had to know your stuff well.

Even though it seems like most people did, I didn't find this course nearly as interesting as psych 1X03. A lot of the material IS interesting, but there are so many details to bog you down that you tend to lose the big picture. It's not so much understanding as rote memorization. That's not to say that this is a bad course - just not as interesting as the social psych aspects of 1X03 for me personally.

The thing to note from this course is that you will spend a lot of time devoted to learning and studying the material if you want to do well. If you enjoy the functions of the brain and following perception pathways and biology, then this is your course.

Does this class require an iClicker? There is one lecture at 12:30 and the others at 5:00 this year. The 12:30 one is full, so I'm just wondering if I could scoot into that lecture

I took this course in the fall of 2015.

There is 1 live lecture to attend per week, 1 tutorial, and 1 or 2 modules to watch per week depending on the unit.

Your grades are based on:
-Weekly quizzes which are comprised of 10 questions that are mostly pulled from the modules, with about 2 from the text and 1 or 2 from the live lectures (30%). You can do these in groups.
-Attendance and participation in tutorial discussion (10%)
-Final exam - cumulative (worth 52% to 60% depending on your experiment credits)**
**You have the option to participate in some experiments with the psychology department. Usually one hour of an experiment earns you one credit. If you earned 4 credits you got 8% weighted off your final exam.
**iClicker points from live lecture are used to help you drop your lowest quiz and tutorial grade.

Content: The content of this course was interesting. You learn about development, evolution (which is all review if you took Bio 1M03), neuroanatomy, vision, audition, hunger, psychological disorders and treatments.

Textbook and Courseware:I did not purchase the courseware (pages that go along with the modules where you can write your notes, with some practice test questions and mind maps included). It depends how you study, but I just took my notes on the computer and then when studying for a test, I condensed my notes into mind maps.

The textbook is a must because questions are pulled directly from there and you have to keep up with it in addition to your readings and watching modules. It was pretty tedious to read though!

Live Lectures Dr. Kim is a very enthusiastic and interesting professor. The lectures were mostly interesting case studies. A lot of laughter goes on in lectures. Another incentive to go to lecture is the iClicker quizzes. If you answer correctly you get points which are used to drop your lowest quiz and tutorial grade.

Exam I thought the exam was manageable, but it was difficult for me to study every unit in enough depth in time for the exam. It's certainly not the scariest exam, but because you can do the weekly quizzes in groups, you might not know as much as you think you do when it comes to writing the exam.

I worked hard at this course and got a 10. If you've taken an anatomy course (most likely if you're in kin or nursing) this course will be easy for you as the bulk of the course focuses on anatomy of the brain, the eyes, ears, and some digestive organs.

Overall, you certainly come away with knowledge of important concepts for future courses in the department, and it was enjoyable to take. Also, the way you're graded makes it easy to have a high mark going into the exam. I would recommend this course!
