I took this course in the fall of 2015.
There is 1 live lecture to attend per week, 1 tutorial, and 1 or 2 modules to watch per week depending on the unit.
Your grades are based on:
-
Weekly quizzes which are comprised of 10 questions that are mostly pulled from the modules, with about 2 from the text and 1 or 2 from the live lectures (30%). You can do these in groups.
-
Attendance and
participation in tutorial discussion (10%)
-
Final exam - cumulative (worth 52% to 60% depending on your experiment credits)**
**You have the option to participate in some experiments with the psychology department. Usually one hour of an experiment earns you one credit. If you earned 4 credits you got 8% weighted off your final exam.
**iClicker points from live lecture are used to help you drop your lowest quiz and tutorial grade.
Content: The content of this course was interesting. You learn about development, evolution (which is all review if you took Bio 1M03), neuroanatomy, vision, audition, hunger, psychological disorders and treatments.
Textbook and Courseware:I did not purchase the courseware (pages that go along with the modules where you can write your notes, with some practice test questions and mind maps included). It depends how you study, but I just took my notes on the computer and then when studying for a test, I condensed my notes into mind maps.
The textbook is a must because questions are pulled directly from there and you have to keep up with it in addition to your readings and watching modules. It was pretty tedious to read though!
Live Lectures Dr. Kim is a very enthusiastic and interesting professor. The lectures were mostly interesting case studies. A lot of laughter goes on in lectures. Another incentive to go to lecture is the iClicker quizzes. If you answer correctly you get points which are used to drop your lowest quiz and tutorial grade.
Exam I thought the exam was manageable, but it was difficult for me to study every unit in enough depth in time for the exam. It's certainly not the scariest exam, but because you can do the weekly quizzes in groups, you might not know as much as you think you do when it comes to writing the exam.
I worked hard at this course and got a 10. If you've taken an anatomy course (most likely if you're in kin or nursing) this course will be easy for you as the bulk of the course focuses on anatomy of the brain, the eyes, ears, and some digestive organs.
Overall, you certainly come away with knowledge of important concepts for future courses in the department, and it was enjoyable to take. Also, the way you're graded makes it easy to have a high mark going into the exam. I would recommend this course!
