Quick Question
ok quick question. my friend is confusing me and i know he's wrong.... I want to get into an honours program third year. I have a CA of 3.1 from first year. So, if i need a 6.0 CA to get into an honours program for third year, I just need a 6.0 CA in my second year correct? My friend thinks I need a 9.0 CA to get in because the 9.0 and 3.0 CA's will add up to a total 6.0 CA over the two years
thanks for the help in advance

your friend seems right.
however, it really depends on what the exact requirements are.
contact the academic advisors for that program.

you really should contact the academic advisors though.
you could be put into the honours program with a 6, but cumulative average does mean the average from every course you've taken.

I have an idea! If you need a 6.0 CA by the time you're entering third year, use this chart http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...ent/pg145.html to calculate imaginary marks that would add upto a 9.0 CA next year, and average them with your marks from this year. That way you'll know for sure if you'll get in or not - provided that you do get that 9 or above average next year.
Do you know specifically what honours program you'd like to get into though?

right, but if it says CA, then its mostly all the courses you have completed so far... which at that point would mean first and third year.
just because you want to get into an honours program third year doesn't mean your first year marks just dont matter anymore.
looks like you need the 9... good luck with that lol, depends what courses your in though, its definitely do-able

Like people have mentioned, you're going to need to get about a 9 to average your two years into a 6.0 C.A. It's definitely possible to do it, you will just need to really buckle down on your work and not be afraid to get help when you're struggling with something.

To calculate the average you will need, you need to look at every grade you got and then use the formula that the University uses to calculate averages.
It's a weighted average based on all courses you've taken. The grades are weighted based on the number of units each course is worth (3 for a half-year course, 6 for a full-year course).
