The joke part (I'm assuming) was about your Faculty telling you there is nothing they can do about your midterm and hoping you'll go away.
A really good resource to use is the Ombuds office (
website here) They deal with issues pertaining to the University. They're an impartial office, and anything you say to them is CONFIDENTAL. They're located on the second floor of MUSC.
So drop in and make an appointment to talk to someone. No one should have to write an exam in a shitty environment. (I had to write during a football game last year. SO. AWFUL)
