registering for level II + summer school
So I am now in Level I life scieces and I want to continue in Life Science for my whole undergrad year.
1) So, if I am already in life sciences, will I still re-select life sciences when signing up for level 2 programs?
2) Also, at this point, am I only selecting my program of choice or am I selecting my perfered programs and the courses for 2nd year in each program. For example, I would select life sciences and the courses I want to take in 2nd year and then I would select biology and choose the courses from this program that I would take in 2nd year if I end up going into this program.
3) I want to take 1 year of English and I didn't take any first year English courses in my first year because I thought it would be time consuming. So can I take English 1A03 in summer school and then English 1AA3 in 2nd year as elective? because I read somewhere that upper year students can't take 1st year courses but i'm not sure if it's true.
4) How is physics 1B03 in summer school?
5) Do I have to pay for summer school courses? How does the payment process work?

I know it's a lot of questions but I really need information on these things. Thank you for all your help

As for question 3, upper years can take first year courses, just not too many of them because most programs have a limit on the number of 1st year courses you can take.

1) Yes, you would list Honors Life Science as your 1st program choice when doing your selections, (honors = 4 year program)
2) At this point you are only selecting your programs of choice, course selection will come later on in the summer (July, I think)
3) Yes you can take 1A03 in the summer and then 1AA3 in 2nd year. But why not just take both during the summer? Upper years can take 1st year courses, I believe the maximum number of 1st year credits you can have is 42 so that is a total of 14 first year courses - so you are eligible to take 4 more 1st year courses - assuming you have taken 10 in your first year)
4) Don't know about summer school but it can be difficult during the year depending on the prof that you get - Nejat is horrid, but others may not be so bad. Personally if I were you, I would take it in summer school.
5) Yes you do have to pay for summer school courses. The payment process is very likely the same as it is during the year - you will see the amount you owe on your payment agreement and you pay the same way you did for normal year tuition.

I dunno about the other questions, but for #4: I would 100% recommend taking Physics during the summer. I took it with Dr Sills last summer. He's since retired so I don't know how relevant this will be... but I thought he was a great prof and the course was enjoyable and doable. Even though it's "compacted" into 2 months, there was still more than enough time to work through lots of practice questions and keep up with the material. I think Physics is one of those courses where you just need to dedicate a lot of time and brainpower (especially if its not your strong point, like for me) and it's just so much easier during the summer when you have nothing else to worry about (unless you decide to enroll in a second summer course... even then, it's still manageable)

And yes, you have to pay for it. I forget exactly how much.

If you have any more questions about physics @ summer school, let me know!

Would it just be lectures and labs for physics in summer school? also, would I still have to do CAPA and weekly quizes (I did these in Physics 1L03)? And are the labs difficult for Physics 1B03 or are they just dry labs?
Thanx

Hey, sorry for the delayed response haha. Yes, there are lectures (twice a week for 3 hours) and labs (once a week) although you'd be doing a fewer # of labs compared to a regular semester during the year. I'd have to double check but I think we only did 5 or 6 labs. You'll still have to do CAPA, but unlike the labs, there are the same # of CAPA assignments as there are during the year, which means the work is more compressed (approx 1 capa per week). We didn't have weekly quizzes but we did have i-clicker questions every lecture (not sure if that's what you meant.. I didn't take 1L03). Keep in mind that it'll be a new prof teaching Physics this summer so s/he may structure the course differently.

I didn't find the labs too difficult, but I'd recommend preparing really well beforehand - answer as many questions as possible from the lab manual on your own - it makes the labs go a lot smoother.

luna says thanks to marcie for this post.

I'm retaking some courses due summer school to upgrade. But I don't know when my GPA from these courses will go to my level II program choices and be counted towards a level two program. Will I need to let the faculty know that I'm retaking some required courses for their program and that they have to wait for my new GPA to calculate my CA or will they automatically do that. thanx!

ur GPA will be calculated from both courses even if u upgrade but im pretty sure ur summer school marks wont be a factor in determining our level 2 program, they usually dont take that into consideration. (unless ur eng) Ur level 2 program will depend on ur marks during the year, but your best bet is to talk to an academic advisor or someone in charge of the program u want to apply for.

you might have to speak to an academic advisor about the protocol of getting a waiver/conditional acceptance
but as for how you mark is upgraded, i believe they average the two.... so if u got a 0.. then a 12.. u get a 6 (highest possible mark)
