This is the link to information about every residence building:
http://housing.mcmaster.ca/Residence...Buildings.html

There are some pictures provided as well for each residence. I think Moulton, Matthews and Hedden all have bunk and loft rooms. The selection process is lottery based so you may not necessarily get the residence you want. Your preference really comes down to the type of environment you're most comfortable living in. Sorry if that wasn't very helpful but feel free to ask any other questions!

I was told by some people this year that when signing up for residence they couldn't choose which residence to live in. They could only choose the room they wanted to live in (i.e. single room or double room). But that was for an upper year student, so maybe it's different for first year students. I have lived in Moulton, Whidden and Brandon and really liked all three of these residences. I think all of them are good, you just may not think so initially. You'll get to love any residence that you live in!!

I believe that what makes a residence great is not really the rooms but the people that you will be spending 8 months of your life with. So if you don't get into the residence you prefer don't worry, I'm sure the people you meet will make up greatly for it.

Not necessarily when it comes to roommates. There are tons of times where people are stuck with a roommate they dislike and can't stand. Such as the situation I've experienced this year.

I'd say try to get a single or double room. If you get a bunk & loft you have a greater chance of getting a bad roommate. Honestly I would be willing to be pay more money if it meant not living with one of my current roommates.

Yeah, roomates can be a problem sometimes. I know a couple people on my floor that have had this problem. I think that if you set rules in place and respect each other, you should be fine. I'm not great friends with my roomate, but we manage. Plus you don't have to spend all your time with your roomate. I spend most of my time in other people's rooms to socialize and to group study. Although when it comes to self-studying, all I have to do is ask and my roomate will put in earphones. When it comes to sleeping, we turn off all the lights and put the laptops on the lowest brightness.

If there's a will, there's a way. Communication and understanding is all that is needed. Although, I do know there are really stubborn selfish people out there.

well...technically if you have a really good reason, the housing services is supposto allow movement but...it almost never happens. so dont expect to be able to switch. its easier to make it work and honestly showing common courtesy is usually all that is needed

Well, it's possible but not if it's simply a matter of you and your roommate(s) not getting along. It would have to be a very serious issue.

Very, very serious...I have heard of it happening three times, and each were serious issues.

Yeah, you'll end up with a first year student as your room mate. You can cook your own food in residence. There are kitchens in the Common Room of each floor for residents in your floor to use. If you end up in Bates or Keyes though, you'll have your own kitchen which you will only be sharing with your room mates.

Actually I got a 2nd year roommate when I was in 1st year. This is extremely rare though. I would say that if you are wary of getting a "bad" roommate, you should consider getting a single room. However, you also have to think about the fact that single rooms are reserved for those with health issues and such.

I was really worried too in First Year about who my roommate would be. I ended up in a residence I didn't sign up for, AND I was with a 2nd year student. I actually found that my roommate was extremely helpful, especially when it came down to midterms and assignments (he's in the same program as I am) and really gave some helpful insight about different things on campus. I actually found that I had an amazing time on residence because of the fact that I didn't expect it. Remember, though, that they pair you up with a person who is best suited to your application, so don't fret!

To each his/her own, but part of being in residence is the randomness of the application process. Residences aren't going to be exactly the same each year, so you just have to make the most of it!

lorend, saigalhz all say thanks to myoozik for this post.
