Science 2C00 Summer school
Hey guys, I have wondering, I heard that you could take Science 2C00 (the resume improving course) over the summer as a first year student, yet when I tried registering for it on SOLAR, it said I failed to meet the pre-reqs. Do I have to be fully registered in a second year science program in order to take it? Or is it possible to take it ahead of time as a first year student during summer school.

Thanks

My guess is that you're still considered a first year student in the system. Officially registering as a second year student would be too late. Go to their office or email them about it and see if they allow you to take the course. The summer courses are usually for people who didn't take the course even though they've applied for co-op, meaning this is their last chance to take it.

Don't worry about having to take it during the year. It takes little to no work at all other than showing up for more than a set number of days, writing a few reflections and a resume, which is going to be critiqued. It's like Gr 10 Careers, except easier, more specific to you, and pass-or-fail.

You're still considered a first-year student in the summer after first-year. It's not very likely that they will allow you to register in it, since it's mostly aimed at 2nd year students, but it won't hurt to email the co-op office!

Alternatively, you could just schedule a resume critique if that's only what you want. The website also has a ton of resources: http://www.science.mcmaster. ca/scce

Co-op programs start in 3rd year anyway (you apply near the end of 2nd year at the end of February or so) so you can take it in 2nd year. It doesn't count for credits and it's only seven 1-hr sessions with 4 reflections written at the end. Not very much work at all. Some, if not all programs also allow you to take it in the first term of 3rd year, so no rush.

Ah, would you recommend taking it as a first year during summer school? Because I missed a week of class already ><, or would it be better to take it during the school year as a 2nd year?

It doesn't really matter, but if you missed a class, it's best to just take it next year!

There is no reason to take it during the summer of first year. Just take it during your second year; the work load is minimal and it won't add any stress on top of your other classes.

Correction: You apply during second year, not after. Also there is only one chance to apply for co-op and that is in second year.

But indeed take it during your second year and try not to do it during the summer of 2nd year, since they seem to take it pretty seriously that you need it done before you start co-op. I think only one program allows you to take 2C00 in third year and I think that program is the biopharm one, since co-op doesn't start until later in the year (summer). You will need the skills 2C00 introduces you to when you start looking for placements in the semester previous to your first co-op work term.

Oops, thanks for catching that. You'd think I'd know that being in a co-op program, guess not
