Senior Thesis (Science Programs)
I will be doing one next fall and spring (2013-2014 Academic Year). For those that have done it, how is it? Do you think it is a differentiating factor for medical school applications? Most competitive people I know (11+ GPA) are doing one.

Thanks!

I really don't think med schools care too much. How it is depends very much on the lab you do it in. I enjoyed mine, I thought it was a great experience and I'm really glad I got the chance to do it.

It doesn't make a difference at most schools. If you have no research experience whatsoever (not required for applications), then it might be useful for more research intensive schools like U of T. It also might help if you're looking to get a reference letter.

When I was going through the process, most of the students that I talked to were "research lol, i'd rather do X". Essentially, do it if you feel like you're going to enjoy the process. If you'd prefer to do other things, then do that instead.

I also agree that it doesn't make much difference. But the autobiographical sketch does have a section where you list research experience so it could be helpful if you don't have any research experience.

Personally I chose not to do it because I worked in the lab for the past summers and part-time in the school term so I felt no need for any additional research experience.

Also I heard that although it can feel like a breeze in term 1, when term 2 rolls around with poster and thesis deadlines, it gets really hectic (I'm a big procrastinator so I'd really have a problem with this).

But I've had people tell me that it can be an easy 12 (which means getting 3 12s as it is a 9 unit course). This is depending on the supervisor and project, of course.
