Strange - McMaster has 31 million hits on google
So, I stumbled upon a strange occurrence on the Internet regarding our university. Take a look.
If you type in "McMaster University" in google the number of hits you'll get is ~31mil page results. It seemed quite high, so I tried typing in "University of Toronto" and it only got 17mil hits. I said to myself, wait that doesn't make sense, wouldn't uoft be higher? And so the questions begin...
Typed in google (without quotes):
"McMaster University" - 31.3 M
"University of Toronto" - 17 M
"University of Waterloo" - 2.9 M
"University of Western Ontario" - 3.4 M
"University of British Columbia" - 22.1 M
"Queens University" - 2.3 M
"York University" 60.2 M ***PWNED US ALL
as some people have pointed out the quotations may be the game changer. =P

I don't think it has anything to do with your connection. I just tried it too and got the same results.

I'm pretty sure the results are skewed because Google also seems to add results for each word individually.
I also noticed that when you say you searched "McMaster University", you actually mean you searched McMaster University, without the quotes. If you add the quotes, you get significantly fewer results since Google searches for that specific set of words.
It also sort of explains why York U and UBC have such high results: because "York", "British" and "Columbia" are searches that would turn up a lot of results on their own.
This is just my best guess, and I'm probably wrong to an extent since if I was dead-on, then I'd expect UBC to bring up way more results.
/waits for someone to correct me

Entropy's right. "McMaster University" gets 4 M and "York Univeristy" get 7 M. I really don't think the number of google hits means anything though

Type it with quotations so that it only searches for hits that have those words in a row.

Google Trends search for McMaster (I didn't include the term "university" since most searches are still from Hamilton and other uses for McMaster wouldn't have any significant effect on the overall trend). Seems like Mac's getting less popular in comparison to previous years, but Mick Bhatia's research combined with the recent strikes has definitely boosted search hits.
What's much more interesting though is MUGSI's yearly trends...notice those spikes?

Pretty much. The strike has impacts at a number of different levels & people, who would be searching up McMaster to see what's up and whether the strike has ended yet.
