The number of pages google shows is approximate. It would not be feasible for google to search every page and count how many pages return "McMaster University". They have an algorithm that predicts this number depending on how popular the search keywords are.
In the past, typing in "the" actually showed a ridiculous number that actually exceeded the number of pages that google has from all of internet.
Once it was pointed out, google has fixed the "algorithm". But this shows that these numbers are extrapolated.
Google Trends search for McMaster (I didn't include the term "university" since most searches are still from Hamilton and other uses for McMaster wouldn't have any significant effect on the overall trend). Seems like Mac's getting less popular in comparison to previous years, but Mick Bhatia's research combined with the recent strikes has definitely boosted search hits.
Don't forget how there's the last name, "McMaster". There's an article there from Fox News about a football player named ______ McMaster.

True, but didn't really make much difference in the scheme of things (same pattern was seen when only looking at searches from Hamilton). I guess it's like a random variable since there will always be some random non-university McMaster searches.

More importantly, who the heck the using Chinese MUGSI?
/carefully avoids joke about quality and China
I have to admit, that's also the first thing I noticed.
I even went through the trouble of measuring out the lengths to find out it's 10%...but avoided making a racist comment =D
But does that mean 10% of students accessing MUGSI are using Chinese Google?! That's pretty significant...

When looking at the google trend, there's spike due to Mick Bhatia.
His research was in Nature, CNN/NBC/FOX/every major news network, it was on Reddit for quite some time, various technological websites, etc.
I'm pretty sure the results are skewed because Google also seems to add results for each word individually.
I also noticed that when you say you searched "McMaster University", you actually mean you searched McMaster University, without the quotes. If you add the quotes, you get significantly fewer results since Google searches for that specific set of words.
It also sort of explains why York U and UBC have such high results: because "York", "British" and "Columbia" are searches that would turn up a lot of results on their own.
This is just my best guess, and I'm probably wrong to an extent since if I was dead-on, then I'd expect UBC to bring up way more results.
