The Beyonce/Miley parts go together really well in that song.

Here's some I can think of (good and bad):

The recession/unemployment
Michael Jackson dies
Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize
Obama closes Guantanamo Bay
Prop 8 is passed in California (I know this was only in one state, but with the use of celebrity, it became a national and international issue)
H1N1
Twitter/Facebook grew in popularity like a billion percent
Summer 2009 at the box office (highest grossing summer of all time)
Jon and Kate Gosselin
Balloon Boy
Christian Bale's on set freak out
Miracle on the Hudson
Chris Brown/Rihanna

I don't necessarily agree that all of the things are important or defining moments, but I think they were the most talked about moments of 2009.

*facepalm*x infinity :(

Most of the things on that list just go to show how silly our society & the role of media in it has become. You see, as Andrew mentioned most of this trash about so called celebrities is created and thrown about by tabloid fodder on grocery store checkouts(we usually hate on the kid but that was such a emphatic post!) Then repeated by equally trashy Fox News/MSNBC coverage. These days even the supposedly more upscale outfits like People magazine are onto the bandwagon. News(aka notable stuff that happened in 2009) not equal to Entertainment; I stock the news/magazine shelves where I work and its just depressing!

There was so much that went on in the world in 2009 that no one HEARD about! Its ridiculous!

As a random example, so much is going on even today! If you look at the news, what's the biggest thing? Avatar! Yes a movie about smurfs and a paraplegic astronaut!

Wow what a year... What a decade too, the decade that pretty much defined my adolescence.

I agree. But there's a difference between "important things that happened in 2009" and "things most talked about in 2009". My list was the latter. This isn't something new to 2009 - this happens every year, all the time.

And I do think Balloon Boy was actually "important" in a sense. The parents are idiots and they just wanted a reality show, but I think it was important news to show that people get (somewhat) punished for abusing the FAA, police force, etc. I don't think that story was necessarily all about "celebrity".

I might be biased because it happened so near the end of the year, but fully sequencing the DNA for Melanoma and Lung Cancer was a huge deal.

Completely dig that mash-up as well.

well, for me this was a great year until december

- I realized my priorities in life
- I did awesome in my A Levels
- Pakistan won the 2009 T20 World Cup (yeah you guys wouldn't know much about it)
- Finally got the visa to Canada
- Did well in the exams (3 A- (yet))

Worst part: Spilled water on my laptop, hdd not powering on
- Bought an amazing new laptop and got a kickass idea for the hdd lol

Also:

- MJ died some days before his last show
- We saw every famous site on the planet registering on Twitter
- Windows 7 released!

Ummm, he wasn't a pedo, do some research. The kids (who are now a lot older) admitted that they were told by their parents to lie in court.

One significant thing in 2009 would be Obama becoming president, who just ended up being a lot of hype and being one of the most disappointing presidents ever.

True. For example, a lot of people don't know about the new income tax cuts that have kicked in for Ontario today.
