Summer Orientation Program Guides new first year students!

First-year students and their parents are invited to attend McMaster's Summer Orientation Program which runs on June 26, June 30th, July 2-3 and July 6-9th. The goal of the program is to assist students with their transition to the academic side of university life.

Students will participate in a variety of sessions that will address their needs as new students. First-year psychology professor Joe Kim and his assistant Matt Pachai will present a workshop that focuses on the difference between university and high school academics, focusing on study strategies, note-taking and test writing. Award-winning business professor Nick Bontis will also star in a motivational video that depicts the life of a university student.

Students will also have a chance to take part in a life-mapping exercise which will allow them to outline both their short term and long time goals, and Career Services will run a session on how students can make the most of their McMaster degree.

An interactive transition activity has also been organized to help students become familiar with the McMaster Campus and all of the services that are available. Parents can also be part of a session on how to deal with the transition they will face when their children become university students.

In addition to this program, students will have an opportunity to attend academic counseling sessions with their faculty advisor, who will help them choose and register for courses. Some faculties will offer a computer lab component for students to access SOLAR, McMaster's online course selection software. More details here: http://fye.mcmaster.ca/orpresop.html

The Summer Orientation Program gives first-year students the opportunity to meet peers from their own faculty as well as students from other faculties. They will interact with upper-year student volunteers, who can provide information and insight about their own university experiences.

Students will receive a Student Success Package that includes an abundance of valuable information about the services and resources available to them at McMaster. As part of the Student Success Package, Parents will also receive the First Year Experience Office Parent Calendar, which has important information and dates relevant to students and their families beyond first year.
