Switching out of engineering!!!
Hey, I'm posting this for a friend. She's in engineering right now and hates every minute of it and isn't doing so well (3.2 CA -1st sem only). To make it into second year engineering you need a 4.0 CA, and most other programs in like other faculties are like around the 5/6 range. I'm assuming, engineering's required CA is smaller because its a more difficult program to be in. Is there any way a lower CA in engineering can be considered as a higher CA for some other program (assuming she has all the course requirements for the program)??? She wants to do communication studies but the admission CA is 5.0!!!

It is usually 3 or 4 for the worst program in other faculties (eg:non honour LS/PS). You chose a challenging program and you have to suck it up.

That said, i am transferring out engineering with a GPA>8.

No, there is absolutely no way they will look at your friend's CA and say 'oh, she's nearly two full grade points below the cutoff but she was in engineering so we'll let her in.'

If she is set on communications, then she will likely have to do a bridging year where she takes courses to boost her CA so that she can gain entry. At this point, dropping all of her courses will result in failing the term, and getting kicked out of school due to the low GPA that would result, so as someone else said, she will have to finish the term, and try not to get kicked out due to low grades - she's borderline right now.

She should speak to an academic advisor.

A lot of really good advice has already been given here (biggest one being 'talk to Sally Williams') but if your friend wants she can also look into making an appointment at the SSC (Student Success Centre) on campus.

They might be able to help her tackle some of the roots that are contributing to her low GPA, which could help her boost it next year so she can switch out.

Hope things turn out for your friend!

Personally, I see it valid that he asked that. Students that are not proactive in their education isn't going to go far with it. You can't be shy or timid to do your own research. Well guess that is why his friend is failing out right? Probably didn't do her own research into the engineering program and now hate every moment of it.

Because his 'friend' is the OP himself.
